Pressure washer sand blasting

Have any of you guys ever tried a pressure washer sand blaster? I'm thinking about something like this.:bigthink:

bet it wouldnt be hard to make something like that, i did something similar with a blow gun on my compressor some clear fuel line and baking soda...worked out pretty good but REAL messy

I like it, wonder how productive it would be. Buy one and test it out and tell us how it goes...:biggrin2:

The abrasive would be " one and done".

Once the sand gets wet, the tube ain't gonna suck it up!! :bigthink:

My best results were with a pressure tank sand blaster.

Any sand blasting is messy unless it is in a box. :bigthink:

Where is that stainless tank you mentioned!!?? Maybe it would make a good sandblaster!!??

It's one and done anytime I sandblast something I don't have a cabinet and all my big stuff is done in a gravel lay down yard so 6 in one... This would allow me to do stuff at home instead of having to haul everything to work.

Taking a part down to bare steel and covering it in water at the same time just doesn't seem like a good idea to me.

At my old job (20 yrs) I used and sold sandblasters that ran off of pressure washers. They work well. The major advantage to them is that you don't have the dust. What happens is the probe end goes into the sand, either in a bucket or right into the bag, and the water rushing over the pickup tube creates the suction to pull the sand. The sand along with water pressure and volume does the cleaning. What we used to do was inject a rust inhibitor into the water as we cleaned to take care of flash rust, but that was a specilized piece of equipment. I don't know what the volume and pressure is of the PW you want to use, but the blaster should state the requirements. That one in northern will work fine, just steel wool what you blast after dries. We would use those type of blasters in downtown areas for removing graffiti from building ect, that way we didn't have to deal with dust on cars or neighboring bussiness, just shovel up the wet sand when we where done. I also used them in plants that had sensitive equipment around where they didn't want the abrasive dust floating around.

I think I'll get one and give it a try. Doubt that the water can rust what I'm going to try it on any more than it already is. I'll post pics when I get it. :biggrin2:

Got the blaster ordered. Gonna give it a try on my nasty 71. I'll post some pics after I get it and try it out.

Sam, my brother has one for his pressure washer, it works pretty well to rough nasty suff in, gobs of paint, grease, etc. Trouble is is sand and water don't go together well and getting it to feed can be a pain. After he got his big hot water pressure washer we just peel most stuff off with it, let it dry and hit it with the media blaster.

Ben

I know the sand needs to be dry for it to work. I figure for what it cost's if it works even half as good as they claim then I'll be happy. We will see. :bigthink:

Can't wait to see your pics, buddy!

Well I got the sandblaster today, only took Fed Up a week to get it from NC to VA. Ordered a spare nozzle while I was at it, that showed up last week and the blaster showed up today. Both shipped from the same place. Shipping them both together in one box would have been too much like smart. No gotta make two deliveries to the same place on two different days. I give up.:bash2:

Anyway I know the quality of the blaster is the best cause it's made in CHINA. LMAO. :biggrin2:

I'll let you guys know if it works as soon as I can. :beerchug:

Very nice, Sam.

Next project will be a couple 60" Haban decks come spring time. It's nice when something works as advertised.:biggrin2:

So far I've used some mason sand from Lowes and some 40 grit quartz sand blasting sand I picked up at NAPA. I want to try something a bit coarser next time. Also I need to make some kind of hopper for the sand, the pail deal is a PITA as the sand is used up you need to keep tipping the pail. Ve Gonna Fix Dat By Golly:biggrin2:

gcbailey 10-13-2012 10:08 AM

you don't want to try it when it's about 15 out and see if you can get instant ice powder coating? :biggrin2:

Looking forward to your pics, Sam! :beerchug:

If I were you I'd use rust converter before you prime. There's still a lot of discoloration visible where the really bad rust was.

Sam Mac 10-13-2012 10:41 AM

Matt

The tower is not finished yet, ran out of sand. It's also got a couple holes that are rotted through that need to be patched. Figure once I get done with all the cutting and welding to make the M12 fit I will hit it once more with the blaster then some POR15 and paint it Red & White.

I also want to try it on some sheet metal before I do the hood to be sure it won't destroy it.

ihcc104 10-14-2012 01:00 AM

Wow, That thing is working great. I have a question, How do I know if this will fit on my pressure washer.... Also how many GPM/PSI is your pressure washer?

Sam Mac 10-14-2012 06:55 AM

My pressure washer is a 3GPM 3000PSI Northstar/ Northern Tool. The sand blaster calls for 3 - 8GPM at 1500 - 3000PSI. I changed the fittings on the sandblaster to get it closer to the trigger, it came with a 2' or so long wand and I wanted it closer for better control. Just 1/4" pipe fittings. You can check it out on the Northern Tool web site, it's item number 2260

wjamesm 10-11-2013 09:23 AM

Sam how well do you think this type blaster would work on heavy rust , like a truck frame .

Sam Mac 10-11-2013 04:39 PM

I think it would do the job, it is not as fast as a big air powered blaster and it is a bit hard on the nozzles. I have used up two of them so far. If you buy one get a couple spare nozzles at the same time.
