Very Rare Offering Here IH 982

If you have the cash these don't pop up everyday.

That is a nice 982!

Bob Balk 03-24-2009 11:08 PM

Why is it red?

Eagle Keeper 03-24-2009 11:15 PM

From what I have read, may not be correct. The red ones went to the international dealers and the yellow ones went to the Cub dealers. I have had both.

ajgross 03-25-2009 02:37 AM

That auction is over. I have no clue what happened. But as far as it being red, that one looked like it was IH built which would make red the only option.

:ROTF2: Darn , I was getting all excited for the blade and all. Greenbriar is only about a hour south of me.

dyt4000 03-25-2009 07:21 AM

He ended the auction early...I suppose he probably sold it locally...That was a deal my friends.

aagitch 03-25-2009 08:34 AM

I was interested in it at first but it didn't have front hyd, no turning brakes, or rear pto.

ajgross 03-25-2009 03:02 PM

I think it had the rear pto. You couldn't get one with the factory 3pt with out the pto. If you really want a 982 with all the options, I have one I'd sell you for $3200.

klejeune 03-25-2009 04:04 PM

I thought you could get the 3pt and no PTO, but if you got power steering and turning brakes it had rear PTO as part of a package.

Hi...

According to my IH brochures & Sales Know-How booklet no power steering was offered by IH on the 982.

Also, there is no option requiring another option. Although you would have be kind of dumb to not opt for the Cat O lift if you have the rear PTO installed but nothing requires that AFAIK or can tell. If anyone has some documentation otherwise, I would like to have a copy of it for the OCC Tech library as well as my own...

ajgross 03-25-2009 08:44 PM

Myron I have a copy of the 1981 price list and it says you have to have the 3pt for the PTO. But I guess you can have the 3pt without the pto. I wasn't aware of that until today. I guess I've never seen one with a 3pt and not a pto. You learn something new everyday.

aagitch 03-25-2009 09:10 PM

I spoke to the guy before the auction was ended by him and he said it had no front hyd, no rear pto, and no turning brakes. If you look real good at his picture you can see it doesn't have the rear pto switch. You can tell it doesn't have the other options either if you look really good

AJ: Please email me a hi-res version of that price list. I'll try that photo again and see if I can make it work this time.

Guys, the front hydraulics is easy. I just picked up a dual spool control valve and had the two hoses made up. Total cost less than $100.00 . I needed it for the dirt blade. The original design using the mower deck cylinder is a very bad design. That blade is very heavy and it puts a lot of stress on the bellcrank assy and the chassis. So I built an adapter to mount an actuator to the blade assy. Works great.

I'm not sure where you found the 2-spool valve for $100, but the rest of us can't usually find stuff like that...They tend to go for $250+ on ebay.

I'm confused. That blade may be heavy, but it is surely no heavier than a lot of rear-mounted attachments that are lifted by the same cylinder and rockshaft. I wouldn't go so far as calling that a 'very bad design'. I don't quite understand your modification...:HeadScratch:

murphycc 03-26-2009 05:21 PM

Yep no PS and the rear PTO was an option. I've seen one with cat 0 only and not PTO.

On this particular sale I got an email from someone that knows the buyer, buyer removed hubcaps and cat0 and sold off tractor for $1500. The steering brakes must have been removed as I've not seen a Super without them.

My front power is for blade angle only, it sounds like he rigged his up for lift and lost his angle capability. I wonder if he has a Haban?

Eagle Keeper 03-26-2009 05:48 PM

Ok ,, I don't know about you guys, but I go to a lot of estate auctions. since I live in the boonies a lot of those are farm auctions. So you pick up some bushel baskets full of parts. My blade does not have hydraulic angle capability. It was manual. The original design used a push/pull rod from the right side of the blade back to the lift cylinder. Because of how they did this, it did not apply the lifting force to the middle of the blade. When lifting the blade you could feel the torsional effect it was having on the frame. I simply mounted a linear actuator to do the job. I even installed an LVDT feedback loop to a pitch computer, augmented with a vertical gyro and accelerometer to prevent porpoising on rough terrain. :beerchug: Just kidding. I'll take some photo's when i drag it out this spring. Yes it is a Haban 401 54"

Where did you get a dual valve for so cheap? Was it a one time thing or is there a place you can get them on a regular basis?

ajgross 03-26-2009 08:40 PM

Murphy, it probably didn't have turning brakes. Those were a option on the 982.

You have to network. Hit the auctions, garage sales. Craigslist. Hang out with the pulling guys. They are always stripping chassis and throwing parts to the side. Even Ebay comes thru from time to time. You don't even need a dual spool to run front hydraulics. Just "T" off at the valve and run the new hoses forward. I mean whats the chances you'll be running front and rear implements at the same time ?

ajgross 03-26-2009 10:53 PM

The chances are very good actually. The front ports are generally used on power angle front blades. You need separate hydraulics to lift it and then to angle it.

AJ

Eagle Keeper 03-27-2009 12:43 AM

Thats true AJ. I was referring to a front power lift with manual angle. Your setup is ideal but does require dual spools . By the way, your Cub in the avatar portrays the perfect stance. Can't quite put a finger on it. Just looks right. The Super Cub is a beast !!! Is it not ?

Dang!
Talk about a month and a half late! I would have zapped that one right up. I had to drive out to Arkansas to buy my 982 last summer and I'll tell you that little tractor will easily out perform my 185 cutting grass. Those garden tractors were made to fit big people it's quite comfortable

IAfarmer 05-04-2009 07:01 PM

I know of one for sale in IL. It's in a good friend of mine's barn. He changed out the Onan for a KT 18.

They are fun tractors. I like the Red one's better.

From my Cub Cadet books in 1980 IH wanted to make all of their tractor lines have the same color and styling so for 1.5 years the were red only. When IH sold off the line to MTD calling themselves a seperate entity the red ones were made for IH dealers and the yellow & white ones were made for Cub Cadet dealers.

interesting!!

Spent the last few hours trying to find some info on latest find..learned allot here. I just happened to pick up a 982 today. Didn't know much about them though. This one is basic, 50" deck, no dual brake, rear PTO, or extra hydraulics. Thought it was Kohler powered, but I guess it's an Onan?? Couple of things need attention (probably going to need some help), but seems to be a nice tractor. I own a few yellow and white tractors, but this is my first red one. It is a super size. I'm over 6' and it fits great. I will post pics later.

Congratulations! I'm 6'3 and the 982 is the most comfortable ride I've ever had on a mower. It's even more roomy than my 154 & 185.
