Front push blade for NF clean up
4 Attachment(s)
Folks,
Working on a front blade restoration to go with the other implements on the 147R. I have the blade disassembled. It was very rusty but did not have any holes thru. Several parts have been through the electrolysis tank. (I like that system) I have the main blade in the bath now one half is complete the other half will be done Monday. Any Idea if the electrolysis would be bad for the springs?? Hope to have this blade ready for the show this summer to set alongside the other attachments. This looks a little rough right now! Regards, Chris |
Oh, my, yes the hydrogen from the process will embrittle the high carbon steel of the springs.
I would never put anything stronger than a grade 5 bolt in the tank. |
CAD,
Thanks! I wanted to ask first. I didn't think it would be great for them. Looks like they will get some aggressive wire brushing. Regards, Chris |
Looking forward to your progress and pics!

Great info CAD! |
Hi, well since I am home and not going to the Dannville plow days I did try to get something started today on this plow. I pulled the center pivot out of the de-rusting tank wire brushed the old paint and rust off and set aside to dry.
The main blade had a lot of rust in between the wear strip and the base so I pulled that apart and will clean this area up. The pads had never been moved and took some blaster and gentle turning with a pipe wrench to get them to come free. Weather is great but I am a little under it so not so much action today:( I will try to get some pictures. Regards, Chris |
Chris, I'm thinking your supposed to be taking it easy:biggrin2:
But that's easier said than done. You'll get back on it soon. Never a dull moment with these machines, is there? |
Todd, Yea just about like you taking it easy! How's the 100 coming? Is the SG drying?
I did get the main blade completely disassembled, wire brushed, removed edge dents, dug as much crud out of the corners, and sanded the rough spots. It has a coat of primer on it. Guys this is just going to be a clean up and repaint. Nothing special. The blade is in generally OK condition except for the normal rust pits. Not filling those in either. I have needed a good narrow frame plow since I gave mine away. This one may need to do some work some time:) I did get some primer on that center pivot bracket too. Yea rattle can, I know. Pictures??? Have to find the camera. Regards, Chris |

Your blade looks good, oh yeh, no pictures:biggrin2: I've got two I'm going to make one out of, alot of work on those to come. I'm thinking that alone will make a good winter project after what's gone into the 100, don't know if I care to do that again. Listen to me, I make it sound like I'm done with it!! I think I like the "rough look" of these old tractors:bigthink: |
Todd,
Right the pictures:) Something to be said for these in their "work cloths". You can tell where they been and what kind of life they have seen. My Grandma always said "a coat of paint hides a multitude of sins". Regards, Chris |

Guys,
Some shots of the front blade as it gets freshened. Electrolysis tank bit the big one, and has now consumed two, count them, two battery chargers! More money will fix that. But here are the pieces that got primer and or primer and top coat today. What do you think stainless hardware for the bolts across the front for the wear bar? I am thinking YES. Right??? Still several parts to clean and some new (small compression) springs to find too ( maybe NAPA). I need a number one cart! Anyone have a good one that they want to part with? Mike????:) Regards, Chris |
Chris it looks great! Sorry to hear about the batt chargers.:bash2:
Mike's a buyer not a seller.:biggrin2: |
Duke,
I have been using them (battery chargers) hard over the past couple months. Got a lot of painstaking cleaning done with them too. So I won't be to unhappy about getting a replacement. Trip to Harbor Freight should fix this issue. I think I am nearing the end of the current cub implement clean up projects anyway:) And I did get the big stuff done for this dozer plow. Hope things are good in Cub land! Regards, Chris |
Great pics, Chris! You're doing an awesome job!
|
Why not switch out the bolts? It's what makes you happy, and I know stainless makes me happy:beerchug:
Good phone chat yesterday, we shall do that again soon. Take care |
Allen,
Figured you could relate to the front blade. I know you just added one to your implement list. Thanks! Regards, Chris |
I sure do, Chris. I plan to get the #2 cart painted soon.
|
Allen,
Your #2 would look with a coat of paint! Are you a cart expert? I have this #1 close by and the guy thinks its worth $400 since he has se en some for that much on line. Its in good original condition not restored. Looks to be all there, latch and dump seemed to work tongue is not bent. Has 10%original paint and 90% original rust covered. Not sure if it has rust holes any place? Would like to make him a reasonable offer if he wants to part with it. Any ideas of price ranges? Regards, Chris |
I wish, I was an expert, Chris...lol. IMHO, it's not worth $400. I'd maybe offer him $200-250 for it, and see what happens. Just my two cents.
|
Allen,
Thanks! That gives me some ideas on the #1 cart value. Regards, Chris |
Anytime Chris! I'm always glad to help!
|
I know you guys hate not having pictures but I have this blade assembly about 75%, complete and should have it dont by the weekend. It is going to look respectable cleaned up. Then I need to buy another red dolly/cart and get it mounted on top for another implement in the show train.
I will work on the pictures:) Regards, Chris |
 come on buddy, grass is growing under my wheels:ROTF2:
|
Love the pics - I have a blade I need to do also - I'm beginning to feel inspired - need more pics
|
Ok guys, Sorry about the pictures or lack of! Cheryl did buy a new camera. I have taken several with it and now need to down load them.
I have a lot of stufff to show you. I will be picture overload:) I have been home sick the last two days with a really nasty cold. I have been able to get out and do a few things but did not want to take this cold to work and get others sick too. Off to try some picture loading! Regards, Chris |
Finally some pictures!

Folks sorry for the delays on these pictures.
Here are some shots of the blade and show cart. The blade is done and assembled except for the lift rod. Have to get a IH decal for it! I did use stainless bolts for the wear blade attachment points. Used Nate's idea on setting the springs and it worked great. Basically remove the pivot rod and let the frame assembly come forward with the center pivot point used as the leverage point (near the small rotating lock). Attach both springs and use the frame assembly as the lever for stretching the springs back towards the home position. Very safe and easy. Only minor paint touch up required. I bought two more carts one for this blade and one to hopefully make the granddaughters a barrel train:) I still have to build the tongue for this and get some more "U" bolts to attach the other turnbuckle and the tongue. Yes the long bars of the blade under carriage are wedged into the cart frame. This allows the frame to be up in the center and the turnbuckles will secure it to the pine boards. Hope they come out OK! Look pretty good coming off the new SONY 720P camera. This is the last of the implements for now. Regards, Chris |
Chris the pics look great! I hope you get feeling better soon.
|
Your blade is looking awesome, Chris! Thanks for the pics. I also hope you get better soon.
|
I think it looks great. I want to find one for my 147 before winter so I can move snow with it.
|
Looks sweet Chris. Lot of work getting that plow ready and looking good:beerchug:

Luck
Maybe you'll have my luck. I found a WF blade and restored it to looking good to use for our two or three snows every year. Guess what? We didn't get on flake this winter! I found a guy who is going to buy it this month from SC. Maybe if he gets it home SC won't get any snow either.
