Cub Cadet 169
The dream of owning a 169 has come true today. I was so anxious to get it today that my Grandpa went and got it for me while I was still at college! No pictures yet, but there will be!
The bad news is that it is a project, and I mean not just the normal "turns over, but no spark" project. It didnt come with a head, carb, grille, s/g, or the air cleaner, but it does have hydro lift and a deck with it. Even worse...it sat outside with no head for who knows how long :bash2:. Grandpa said the engine is stuck...but, Ive dealt with worse... I know the thread's worthless without pics but they will be here soon! |
Congrats on your 169!
|
If the block is the correct one, hope it is able to be salvaged.
The block in the 169 is unique to it... When the balance gears ventilated my 169, I had a hard time finding a correct replacement... No balance gears in the replacement...will tollerated the additional vibration. The air cleaner is also unique to th 169 as is the muffler/mount.... |
I wonder why the air cleaners are always missing on the 169's...
|
Congrats on the 169!:beerchug:
Can't wait to see pics! |
Congratulations on the 169 IACubCadet You will enjoy it.
I love mine :biggrin2: |

Methos-Awesome! I may need to get in touch with you about it. I will get pics of it tomorrow.
I looked at our sponsors and they do have the correct one for a 169, but its pricey. Grandpa told me it has a decent muffler he THINKS...a head, carb, and a grille shouldnt be too hard to find. I just hope it can be salvaged engine wise. Might need to find a parts machine. |
congrats on the 169
|
Congrats on the 169. My partner is just finishing up a ground up restoration on a 169. You found a nice model.
|
Ive got a feeling that this is whats going to happen to this. I have a 149 chassis ready to be a donor if I need a few things...let the project begin!
|
Ryan,
Congrats on finding a 169! Can't wait to see the pics. As the others said, I hope the block is good. A good 13 fin 16 horse gets real pricey to replace. If the muffler is good, that's half the battle. The heat shield by the muffler is 169 specific, but guys are remaking those. Bring on those pics!:beerchug: |

Finally got some pics of the 169 over break..
the engine is actually in decent shape. It turns free and maybe with a little cleaning of the head it might run. Im sure it will smoke and need an overhaul. Missing the muffler...going to need some new front rims. May need to find another for parts... |
Not bad at all! Good luck on your 169!
|
Ooooh that's an early one. Nice find!
|
TheIHMan-Thanks. Quick question-how can you tell if it's "early"? I dont know a whole lot about these tractors. I did count the fins...its got the magic number...13!
|
Congrats on the 169! It looks pretty good!:beerchug:
Check the numbers on the engine. I only see nine headbolts?:bigthink: |
When they first came out with the 169 they had to use manual lift because they were short on the hydraulic lift setups. Once they got more hydraulic lift units they made it standard on the 169.
|
Good eye Cubcrazy...you know, the shroud says 16hp...but I wonder if someone switched it. :bash2::bash2::bash2::bash2: Looks like well be looking for the CORRECT engine for it too.......
|
How many head bolts does a correct 169 engine have?
|
AND it has the optional hour meter which is hard to find original.
|
Ten. According to the Kohler Service Manual. The engine I have is a 14 hp with a 16hp shroud...
|
Should have 10 Adam.
|
Well, glad I didnt pay too much for it. Im sure it will be hard to find the correct engine for it, but it might be possible. Well keep searching...
|
Good luck with your 169. I have 2 of them,1 running and another ready to put back together. It is the best Cub Cadet ever made. Plenty of power. Just a nice rig. You will enjoy it, but engine parts are hard to find and expensive.

Freshly Overhauled 16HP Kohler Engine
|
Id like it even more if my engine grew another head bolt!

The hour meter was also standard on all 169's from the factory. They were called Maintenance Minders. Ryan, Nice pics. Looks like you have a great start for a 169 restore. You'll find the correct engine, just keep your eyes peeled. |
So for a prior owner to put a 14 HP in, they would have to also install the exhaust and heat shield? Is that it, otherwise a bolt in replacement engine?
Seems like it's worth making it run, if it will, and keep the 14 in until a 16 hp comes along. |

Youre both right. Take your two ideas and put them together. Yes, all 169s had the ported hydro, but the company ran out of hydro lift assemblies, so most came with manual lift, which was then supposed to be taken off by the dealer and have the hydro lift installed. That really didnt happen, so many still have the manual lift. The ones ive seen for sale all have manual lift, but I know guys do put the hydro lift on them because it was supposed to be standard equipment. I plan on leaving this one manual lift and maybe someday find another and have hydro lift on it to show that they came with both.

Dave01- I think youre on the right track. The PO said he bought it in the same condition I got it in. Im assuming either this had a replacement 14hp engine when the original went bad, or a PO traded or sold the 16hp engine for the 14 and put the 16hp shroud on it to resemble it. They had me fooled:biggrin2:

|
Thank you for the link Adam. Im still not sure what I want to do...do I go the route of buying a block and building it myself or buying a used engine that might smoke, but run, and run it for a while till I have more funds to rebiuld it? Obviously its whatever a guy has enough money to do. Ive had several people contact me about engines. Well see what happens. I suppose I could put the 14 back together and still have a half bred 169 till the right engine comes along.

:Announce:
Negotiations have been made, Im on my way to pick up another 169 today. I made sure that it has an actual 16hp engine in it. It has manual lift and the hour meter is missing. I will get pictures tonight!! |

Congrats! Looking forward to your pics.
|
Can someone remind me - besides the engine, is the only difference between a 169 and a 109/129/149 the size of the front axle spindles? Anything else?
Good news on the find! Will you now rebuild the 2nd one, or take the engine and put it in the 1st one? |

Cub Cadet 169 #2...picture time!
|
Its not in too bad of shape. It is the original 16hp that should run with a little work. It may smoke though. Original hour meter and air cleaner, 13 fin Kohler with TEN headbolts :biggrin2: narrow wheels, manual lift.
Dave01-I think what Im going to do is put that 14hp back in the other tractor for now, since the prices people want for 16hp's are so expensive. Someday down the road both will get restored...one with hydro lift-one with manual lift- to show that they came with both options. |
