Garden and Landscaping 2012

It's going to be time to start that garden pretty soon. We've got potato planting coming up pretty soon for us in NC.

:TTWWP:

Lets see what you've got for getting ready for 2012 season!

CADplans 02-17-2012 05:53 PM

I got a "New" cultivator today!! No sleeve or 3 point hitch necessary!!

If my QL1000 will not pull it, I might have to trade it off to one you smoker owners!!:bigthink:

_DX3_ 02-17-2012 05:57 PM

:Woo: That sounds like a great idea :biggrin2:

Methos 02-17-2012 06:01 PM

Here's some pics of Evan helping me get our garden plowed for the up coming season.

He acts like he knows what he's doing, hehehehe. Looks like you all had some fun. :beerchug:

Some video's I've posted before of my buddy Andy and myself plowing his garden. We got carried away and expanded it as well.:beer2:

We used the 1650 with a brinly 12" plow. Now that I've got my tiller belt I'l have to make some video's of some tilling action.:beerchug:

CADplans. your 1000 will pull it. i have to just like that i pull with my 1250.

robpa 02-19-2012 11:39 AM

I've pulled 2-3-4 & 5 bottoms before. This year will be my 1st with a single 10 inch plow and I am looking forward to it.
Those spring tooth harrows only need to scratch the surfave the 1st time over, then set in a bit more 2nd time over. too deep and they just pull the trash to the surface, doesnt take much horsepower. I wish I hadnt scrapped my bigf set.Coulda broke em down for the small tractors..

CADplans 02-19-2012 11:44 AM

I had several requests for larger photos of my method of supporting tomatoes, so I put the photos and a description here;

I planted 10 feet of onions today. I hope to have my cabbage and broccoli plants the first of march! Then on the 7th its on to potato and sweet potato planting. :biggrin2:

Actually this is only my second year of gardening. I have learned what little I know from my neighbor who is a garden king. I can tell you a few things but its not advice by any means.
Last year I got seed Potatoes from walmart ( WORST IDEA EVER ). I would suggest getting seed from the local farm and seed store. Even though it may cost a few extra dollars its worth it because they know what they have and can usually tell you about it.
I plant my seeds in march so for N.C it shouldn't be that much different. I am planting early this year because of the weather we have, even if the frost hits them a little it wont hurt. For the planting I usually dig about a 2" furrow, plant the seed and cover flush with the ground. They say to mound the dirt as they begin to grow but this year I am going to mound up about 5" when I plant. My reason is its hard to get dirt Around the plants.
From then on out just keep enough dirt around them till fall. The more dirt the bigger and better your taters will be.
Im sure someone will come along and give you alot more useful info and correct my mistakes.
If you aren't too overwhelmed and anything else just let me know. :BlahBlah:

What about "fertlize" !!??

Methos 02-28-2012 11:41 PM

Thanks for the info! I called my local farm and garden store and nows the time I should be putting them in depending on how wet it is. Mounding helps with the drainage. Plant 8" apart with 3ft row spacing. Then once they start growing pile more dirt on them.:bigthink: I hope to plant this weekend depending on how much rain we get.:biggrin2:

I'm got some parts coming for the 1650 ISO mounts and then it's time to get the tiller setup on the 1650. I plan on taking lots of pics and making a video of the tiller in action.

CADplans 02-29-2012 12:27 AM

I think I am going to change all my row widths so I can expand the "in row composting"!!

http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...5760x800-1.jpg

Keeps down the weeds, keeps in the moisture!!

Maybe 50". I got the room, and I want a better garden!!

Guess who has to use that grain shovel to move the compost!!?? :bigthink:

:biggrin2:

plow working better now

2 Attachment(s)
I found that my plow was twisting and causing it to sink and anchor ,so I took the moldboard off and attached it more directly to the hitch . Also it is a 8 in Blount Daisy plow ,a horse drawn hand plow from the 1890's ?
I plowed the garden the other day7-8 in with it holding soil as in pic 1
then I took a torch and heated it some and sprayed silicone on it . it started plowing so easy I could not believe it . last pic was after I disc 3-4 passes.

Awesome pics, thanks for sharing!

cubguy 03-03-2012 10:49 PM

I planted 12 broccoli plants today, the local farm and seed doesn't have cabbage yet so this will have to do for now. Pics tomorrow.
Methos, I usually plant 10-15 peppers each year. A variety of jalapenos, sweet bells and banana peppers. :beerchug:
Teaser.

Methos 03-04-2012 04:28 AM

Friday I picked up 5lbs of red and 5lbs of white potato's and some lettuce. Been wet so got to give it acouple of days to dry out. I got the ISO mounts today so I can get the 1650 ready for years to come.

robpa 03-04-2012 09:10 AM

I grow 100 # red chieftan, 100# Yukon Gold, 25# of red gold, 25# of all reds and about 50# kennebec as well as 25# of fingerlings. 500 feet of garlic and around 3,000 onions, couple hundred feet of snap beans and beets and a few other things.
I put the potatoes in the ground soon as I can till the soil. about 1 foot between pieces, about 4 inches deep and level off the soil. when they get about 5-6 inches I hill 1st time and once more when they grow out another 4-5 inches. Potatoes grow up and hilling covers the tubers so they doont get green which ruins them for eating. I drop about 1/2 handful of ferts between each seed tuber before coveri9ng then spray with a liquid fert every week-10 days as they grow. foliar feeding, especially during bloom, is about the most efficient way to get food to the plants. I begin digging within a few days of 75% bloom for early, small new potatoes and keep digging till they are all sold. Fish emulsion with kelp reall makes em pop. I hope I get tyhese Cubs rolling before too long, they are gonna have to work for a livin !

cubguy 03-16-2012 04:18 PM

Got a few plants in so far. 8 broccoli plants, 12 spinach plants, 12 cabbage plants, 8 lettuce plants and a whole lot of onions. Can you tell I like salads? :biggrin2:

I shot some video's on my tilling a garden in my little hood. I have the back plate up so I could slowly backup to help break up the harder clay. In the video's you'll be able to see tiller vibrating and see me backing up and how smooth the tiller acts after I backup. I tried to get the dirt clumps before and after I used the tiller.

I had the lower pulley come off when I went to another garden. I didn't loose anything so I was able to put it back on and get it ready for the next time I use the tiller.:biggrin2:

We had a pretty massive storm last night, nickle size hail and widespread flooding. Every thing is alright except for the garden. Pics
Was lettuce
http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/...s/IMG_5490.jpg
Spinach?
http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/...s/IMG_5489.jpg
Where is the dirt?
http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/...s/IMG_5492.jpg
Found it.

Every thing was hit hard except for one tomato plant, go figure. Now the question is do I till it up and start again or wait and see if the plants survive? :bigthink:

Welcome to gardening in Virginia!!

When I started my garden I decided it had to be flat, so,

http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...202012/IMG.jpg

http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...2/IMG_0009.jpg

we moved a little dirt.

My daughter in the picture is 30 now.

Flat doesn't wash away.

That red 4WD could have some real fun!!
