New project for the kid

i picked up a 105 for my son. has a deck that needs some attention, but looks like everything is there. i don't know why but one of the po's put a 125 sticker on one side only. the engine spun a little too freely for me, so that will be first on our list. it rolled right off the truck. since it didn't run, he wanted me to push him on the tractor to it's temporary home. all 224#. right.
i hope he let's me at least test drive it when he's done.

Sweet score on the 105! THe PO might not have put the 125 decal on there. My 1650 is labeled 1450 on the right side. I call it my Monday cub.:beer2: My son loves his 125! Great tractors for kids to drive.

105/125

The PO didn't swap out that 10hp engine for a 12hp one did he?

ricks 02-05-2012 12:33 AM

no, it has a ten in there. i'm still checking the #'s.

johncub7172 02-05-2012 02:10 AM

2 cubs in one! Nice project for you and your son. You may need to get your own, watch out for yellow feaver. :biggrin2:

The number decal is probably a factory oops...I've heard of more than 10 instances of that over the years.

ACecil 02-05-2012 05:13 PM

Nice find on the 105!

What Allen said.

Send a pic once it's washed for the first time. That's going to be a nice looking original tractor with a good bath and some Turtle Wax

John

105's are awesome tractors! Ive got two and they are handy to have.

If he restores it, he should keep the decal setup :biggrin2:

That's interesting!!! I suppose anything is possible. I never knew that before. I've been on this forum for a while and still learning new stuff---Thanks!

well , i've found a new student in the refurbishing class i'm teaching. seems like my daughter is more interested in this than my son. she helped me drag the 105 up on the bench, and wanted to know how/where to start. she is currently involved in a fashion design contest through school, and needs a project to take her mind off of it. i don't really know the direction she's jumping, but i enjoy having her along side asking questions about the tractor.
she can't wait to help repaint, although i think the 105 just needs a good wash and degreasing. we shall see.

Great to hear about more kids getting involved with the old iron....where will we and our cubs be in 20 years???? 40? 60?

The Cubs will be razor blades and I will be pushing up daisies!!

I have daughters and son-in-laws that only want to run them, not fix them!!

Should have never let them see the movie Kelly's Heros' and "Oddball"!! :biggrin2:

it's nice to have the tractor at a level that doesn't require bending. my daughter agrees that we should just get it going, but can't believe the rats nest for wiring. i showed her how many contacts there are in the electrical system that can fail. since she was a part of my refurbishing a 1984 renken bowrider, she remembered that i used "special wire" for under the dash on the boat. click. this tractor will be rewired in marine grade hardware. if anyone has ever tried this before or has an opinion they'd like to share, please do so. it sounds perfectly logical to me to do it this way. maybe costs a few bucks more. but in the long run, whoever gets this beauty after me will not have the problem i have now.
we'll need to take the carb off and soak it, and we're trying to get to the hydro shift lever and it's shaft as it is frozen. my daughter asks why i can't just bang it loose? $$$$$

Sometimes the easy answers are not the cheapest answers.:biggrin2: I love your table!

happyhab 02-10-2012 09:56 AM

That's a hard lesson to learn, the right way is usually the fastest. You almost have to be a silverback though to restrain from the easy route.

i caught my daughter out looking over the 105 yesterday when i came home from work. she was trying to free up the frozen choke and throttle cables. she said she wants to here the engine run. that's what will keep me going on this project.
wow, did they pack all that into the 6x6 tower space. these narrow frames really are harder to work on. i've read it on hear how many times? but until you dig into one, it's just hearsay. the tires are weathered , so i"ll be tubing them at all four corners. the steering is really loose and i"ll need to check on the camber/caster angle. but just looking at it now, one side seems to be bent. i"ll check back in i'm sure, with more questions. i know there's plenty of narrow frame enthusiasts on here. thanks for eyeing the thread so far. i appreciate your responses.

Rick, I go to Home Depot and buy their universal cable for the throttle and cut those to fit and save some cash too! They are like $7 each. I haven't found a cheap source for the choke cable yet.:bash2:

ACecil 02-10-2012 12:36 PM

Great pics. It's cool that your daughter is into this project with you!

patience. that's what i was told whenever i went fishing with my dad. i apply that to just about everything i do except when it comes to waiting for paint to dry and pb blaster to loosen up the all important bolt. it may have taken ten years for the rust to build but it only took three days of soaking to break it free. i'm sure you're all aware of needing to take one part off to find out why something doesn't work and you wind up having to take apart the whole dang tractor. the hydro lever was frozen in the neutral position as well as the brake. also rusted was the safety switch and it's connector. one thing led to another and i'm cleaning up the slop in the steering. i had the engine out so i could stand the tractor on end to get to the steering. so i cleaned up the frozen throttle and choke, blew out the jets and venturies, took off every electrical connector and polished them up so there weren't any contact issues. i threw in some gas only to find i need a new gasket on the bowl. it may have taken the use of two batteries to start it, but i got it going. sparks, smoke and the occasional sputter shot out of the muffler onto a nearby pile of scrap wood. no fire but the tractor shot like a cannon once and then died. i started it right back up and it purrs like a lion, er, bear, i mean a cub. now i can reassemble all the parts i took off and tear into the mower deck. great day here.

I don't know if the narrow frame tractor hydros work the same as the supers or not but my 2084 hydro lever will not move if the brake is locked on. Infact in an emergency stop by braking mine is designed to return the lever to neutral. My suggestion is to free up the brake and see if that will fix the hydro lever lock problem.

ricks 02-15-2012 11:17 PM

thanks paul. i believe the hydro's on our tractors work in the same manner. i did manage to loosen up the brake mechanism that puts the hydro lever in neutral. i had to clean the rust off of the slide and shaft it rides on though. regreased it too. the friction disc and spring on the shaft for the hydro lever was taken apart and regreased as well. i tried forward and reverse while the back end was up on blocks. not as smooth as when it was new but just as good. i need to read up on the internal brake. all i've seen was a picture, but i need to find out how or if you can adjust it. the brake pedal goes all the way down. i understand that the tractor will slow itself through the hydro, acting like a brake. but i'd still like be assured.

They both work the same way. No hydro lever movement when the brake is on. Keep spraying the PB Blaster it'll get the job done!:beerchug:

i don't know where my last post went. try #2. after i hooked everything back up, i drove the 105 off the table. everything seems to work just fine. forward, reverse. all except the brake. it's going to sit in a temporary spot for now until i get the mower deck cleaned up. i"ll put those pictures on the implement thread under the same heading.

ACecil 02-19-2012 11:17 PM

Nice 105, you have there!

ricks 02-20-2012 10:09 AM

thank you sir. i got lucky with this one. and thank you for providing the oportunity to seek information on this website so that i can put out a working tractor.
