Finally! The 1650/782D restoration
3 Attachment(s)
About 5 years ago my dad and I took apart the 1650 to fix a rear end leak. Well (as it happens to many cub cadet owners):biggrin2: it turned into a full restoration. The only problem was being farmers there are many other projects to work on, so it got pushed to the corner of the shop and there it sat. Since then we got the 782D and because of the Red Power Roundup 2012 in Du Quoin IL (about a half hour from home) next summer we were finally given the excuse to repaint and rebuild both of them.:biggrin2: So we started preparing the 1650 on Tuesday. We washed it and now it is almost ready for paint.

Adam,
Thanks for posting. Nice tractor with the highlift too! Your tractors will look very good for the show. Regards, Chris |
Adam, looking forward to this thread! Looking forward the updates and pics! Keep the two tractors in their own threads so the post don't get confusion.:TwoCents:

Thanks for the comments everyone!
Duke, I decided to put them together because the only thing we are doing with the diesel is repainting it. Dan, I'm south west of Mt. Vernon by about 20 minutes. |

We made some good progress today. We washed the 782D and the 1650's engine. Then I painted the 1650's engine with a can of high temp engine paint. We then sanded the 1650 and I primed all the yellow parts of the tractor and the column. We also took all the old decals off. (I figured out the quickest way to remove the decals is to take a propane torch and heat the underside of the metal under the decal, and then peal it off. Finally dad painted the column and the wheels (because I am not that skilled yet:biggrin2:).

Great shots of the tractors as you get them ready.

TheIHMan,
Those fenders and frame look awesome! Love new paint! Your fenders look to be in great shape too! Don't forget to check your trunnion while you have this apart. Maybe you already know its good, but if you need to fix it, now's the time. Regards, Chris |

We did some more work on the Cub Cadets tonight. I put the bolted down the fenders and then put on the tires on the 1650. Dad finished making the rubber mounts and put them on and then put the engine in it. I jacked up the 782D and took off the tires. Finally dad stripped the paint off the hoods for the 1650. Notice the frame twist on the 782D.:bash2:
|
Adam, sweet pics! If the jack stand were on the frame would the frame still be twisted?:bigthink:
|
Looks Great!:beer2:

Man, I just love these old IH Cub tractors! I'm impressed with the job you boys are doing. Keep up the good work. Thanks for the pics. By the way, those two tractors are on my wish list. I would love to get an oil burning wide frame like the Red 782d...I also want a 1650. But I need more storage room or my wife would divorce me. :biggrin2: Man, I'm jealous. Great job guys!

Sorry, I ment to say the blocks under the rear axles are level. That should make the whole tractor level if it is right? I had the 1650 sitting the exact same way and it was level.

We got some more work done on the Cubs. Yesterday I painted the fuel tank mount/shield. Today we went to the farm and I robbed the rear wheels off a parts cub. If they hold air we are going to paint them and swap them with the 8.5's on the 1250. Then the 8.5's will become the duals for the 1650 when I want to put on the blade on. Dad also painted the hoods for the 1650 minus one side panel (because of non sticking bondo :bash2:) and wheels for the 782D. Will get pics tomorrow. :beerchug:
