What rear end came in the 982?

I was think about putting a Kubota 3cyl. diesel in my 982D & was wondering what rear end they used. Was it the fine spline or the cast & what would be the better of the 2 to use ? I was wondering also did they use a special engine plate or will the Onan one work ? Any body have any pics of what it looks like with the diesel under the hood please so I can see how the radiator. mounts & how it fits ? :bigthink:

To fill you in, they never built a 982D. The 982D that is posted on this website is actually a 1572 painted red with custom decals.

As far as the rear ends, they only used aluminum rear ends in the diesel supers. The only super with a cast rear end is the early 982's. As to what's better, they each have their strengths and weakness. The fine spline axles in the aluminum rears ends are stronger than the course splined in the cast ones, but the cast weighs substantially more. It's a lot of work to put the fine spline axles in a cast rear end for a super.

The engine mounting plate is completely different for the Kubota.

Hi Bob, Putting a fine spline in a cast rear gear trans is not too bad. I've done one, getting ready to do another. Are you going to put a gear trans in that 982?:beerchug:

Hey, hey,,, I resemble that remark. :biggrin2:

cubs-n-bxrs 12-14-2011 02:35 PM

Well maybe I will turn my 1572 into a 982. I Like the red paint way better than the yellow and white on the 82 series. Or maybe flat black like a rat rod. LOL:bigthink:

I think it would be pretty hard to convert a gas machine to a smoker properly. You'll need to move the fuel tank and battery around, make some type of engine coupler and cradle and find a next to impossible diesel hood. All of this could be done but it would be a hodgepodge of a machine. The 982's are worth pretty good money. I say fix it up as a 982 and sell it then find ya a smoker.

+1...and the next-to-impossible to find super diesel fuel tank and supports.

Than you better have lots of cash! All that I'm saying is to make a true never built 982D look real it would take too much to do. Kubota parts are cheap, Cub Cadet diesel parts (hoods, fuel tank and dash panel) are not, if you can find them.
I think DX's BRS is one of the nicest diesels I have seen plus he has power steering that a 982 never had from the factory.
If you do build it, take lots of pictures for us because there are many very talented people on this site and it amazes me the things some people can do. Good luck.:beerchug:

_DX3_ 12-14-2011 09:39 PM

I'll try to get a few for you. :beerchug:

Another thing to do is to download the Service manual for the 1572 for info also.

http://www.ccmanuals.info/pdf/CCC%20...e%20Manual.pdf

One from our Sponsor Binder Books will be the best way to go. Much better pictures.

Sweet pics!

I see dirt! :Spank:

_DX3_ 12-15-2011 04:20 PM

That's why I didn't get a shot of the whole tractor... Still has garden dirt on the tires and plow... It's been so nasty here I can't get it out to clean it.

Did you see that Motor mount bushing with the crack in it up there in the pics?
Gotta get those fixed too.

Better garden dirt then dust! I seen the ISO mount but I figured the dirt would be more fun to make fun of!:biggrin2:

The tank is under the seat and I can't get a pic of it. You will probably have to refer to diagrams on that one. Sorry.

Here's mine on my 882. This is a non-super type, they are a little different. The supers have clearence for the rear pto hook-up and a few other things. What engine you looking to use? The D600 &D640's are installed backwards in Cubs because of running rotation. DaDuke's diesel build has a diesel that turns oposite of these.....just something to put on the check list.:bigthink:

Something else I'm thinking, I don't think you can use a CI rear from a 982 because of the rear dipstick location. These pics are of a super diesel. The first one is looking at the back of the hydro pump and shows the clearence for the pto shaft and the 2nd is where the dip stick clearence will be a problem.

guess i'll stick with the fine spline rear end .the dip stic is in the right place ..:biggrin2:

I had to crack on DWayne a little. He takes cleaning his BRS to a new level! So dirt on it is a rare sight as he cleans it after each use.:beer2:
