Original throttle/govenor troubles
 

Been tinkering with an Original bringing it back to life and de-modifying some "improvements". One of which was to remove the the foot throttle and replace with a cable. The cable we installed is a general purpose. The trouble we are having is we can't get much throttle range. Very little movement on the lever will quickly cover the full range of engine RPM's. I've tried moving the lever on the govenor shaft but still can't get the throttle sensitivity I want. I am thinking the cable is connected too far away from the pivot on the lever itself. My question is were these engines able to get a wide range of engine RPM's like my 128? We've got a 8hp in a 100 Cadet and it is a little finicky, but not as bad as the 7Hp in the Original. Anybody got any pcitures where the throttle cable hooks to the engine?

I just fixed that same problem on my 682. Turned out the governor arm was loose on the cross shaft (the pin it pivots on). The bolt which tightens to hold the arm snugly on the pin was missing. Tightened it up and all works like it's supposed to. I know the governor is different on my engine, but still, it might be something to check.

Nothing loose there. I've downloaded some technical info. that appears an older version than my Kohler service manual. That picture shows the cable running straight from the throttle bracket to the control disc. It doesn't matter how I postion the throttle bracket, we can't get the cable running straight to the disc. Were these cables originally quite long and loop very close to the grill? Also, what is the purpose fo the little rivet in the control disc? Another of my concerns is not being able to set a stop on engine RPM's.

Are you using a spring?

Looks like I'm using the same hole in the disc and have the cable bracket at about the same angle. The rivet in the disc sometimes gets in the way a bit. How well does yours funtction, are you able to get a really wide range of RPM's? Also, if you push the throttle up all the way does the engine rev way too fast?

Spring is going to stay, this machine is actually destined to do a little bit of work.

It works well, it has full range from idle to full throttle. It revs good, but not too fast.

Thanks for the pics and info. Dad did some more checking today and appears the problem is solved. The disc the throttle wire hooks into had to be rotated quite a bit. Apparently the previous owner did a bunch of monkeying around with this before he hooked up a foot throttle direct to the carb. Now the cable is close to vertical when it hooks up and it has a much wider range or RPM's. Also was able to get it not to over-rev. It works so good he is going to take his 100 to the shop and fine tune it as well.

Rebuilt my Cub Cadet 86 and had no governor control because I hooked the throttle cable up incorrectly. Thanks for the pictures from 10 years ago I will be changing my hookup to match the pictures. Frank
