982

I am going to look at a 982 this weekend. The guy wants $1000. for it. It has new tires, and carb, 540 hours on the meter, 50" deck, rear PTO and does 't look too bad. Are these all IH made? I have no experience with the Onan engines and am looking for some advice. Are these Onan engines as good as the Kohlers? I also don't know what a fair price is for these tractors. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated. I posted a pic of it

Thanks,
Earl

If it looks that good and he only wants a $1000 for it, I would jump all over it.

That particular 982 is IH built. Anything built after 1981 is CCC built. With the very early CCC models still using a lot of the left over CI items from IH, then Aluminum rear ends were used. The Onan's are good engines but from what others say, they can be expensive to rebuild, but, there are other motors out there that you can transplant into the 982 if needed. I hope you are able to get it. :beerchug:

That guy sent me an email asking if I wanted to buy it :bigthink:

Matt G. 12-06-2011 08:50 PM

I'd still buy it for $1000, but FYI, I can't see a 3-point hitch on the back in the picture you posted, so that means no rear PTO, either. Also, unless the tires have been changed since the pictures were taken, those are the original 30-year-old tires.

ACecil 12-06-2011 11:22 PM

That's a nice 982! I'd definitely get it! :beerchug:

The rear PTO/3 point, if it has it, is worth about that much alone. The Onan's are very expensive to repair/rebuild when you compare them to the Kohlers and the earlier ones have weak connecting rods. I think a complete rebuild kit is about $1100 for the B48G original engine. That one looks like it doesn't have the rear PTO on the tractor. In my area that would still be a good buy looking at the condition. There is no way of knowing how many hours are on this model because it uses the maintenance minder hour meter. Good luck!:beerchug:

I just got a picture of the rearend and it does not have a PTO or 3pt. Is it still worth the 1000?

Thanks,
Earl

Here's the pic he sent me. If I had the money, i would but don't. He told me he would take $900.00. So you could probably get it for $850.00.

red56turbo 12-07-2011 12:15 PM

For $1000, that looks like a great buy. Even without the 3 point or rear PTO, they are good tractors. Show up with cash and wave $750 in front of him and he may bite. Green in hand works wonders:biggrin2:. As others have stated, the Onans get pricey to work on. Most put in a different motor if the Blonan, er, Onan goes. The Onans are good motors with proper maintenance, oil changes, keepin' the oil full, etc. The 982 I sold had a replacement Onan and it was a great tractor. Good luck and keep us posted on what you do :beerchug:.

I offered 8 but he said no. It's not easy to come up with that kind of money this time of the year. Where are you from in NY? I live in Springville, south of buffalo. Do you know the guy?

Thanks,
Earl

The steering pedestal is red, that normally means it is an IH model. CCC painted theirs black like I have on mine. Not saying it hasn't been painted but a serial number would tell us everything. :biggrin2: Either way I wouldn't shove it out of my shop for leaking drip or two of fluid LOL.

Mountain Heritage 12-07-2011 09:40 PM

If it runs good - buy it! That's a decent deal. Like Matt said, looks like original tires. But if things check out that they have not been abused, the deck is decent, engine and hydro - anything else can be fixed if there is anything else. Tin work looks to be fairly straight, not sure about dash, can't really see it very well in the pictures. Definately worth going to look at.

That's an IH built 982. If you look at the first pic posted, the serial number tag is smaller which would be IH. The larger tags came on a CCC. Someone will hopefully end up with that beast! :biggrin2:
