Hunting and Fishing ***Picture Warning***

For our hunting and fishing friends.

nikster 11-29-2011 02:30 PM

Yipeeeeeeeeeeee, :beerchug: guys show us the goods. Or at least a small story, Hunting, Fishing, Shooting, Mushroom hunting, Evil guns, anything to do with the outdoor stuff.

Nothing better than drinking a cup of :coffee: & reading about outdoor things.

Every few days my wife keeps running in the house to tell me something "black" is in the pasture.

We have been "Turkey Central" this year, they love the crab grass seed!!

Wife's first bow kill and coyote

3 Attachment(s)
My wife Nancy got her first bow kill. It's a 1 1/2 year old doe, she was busting at the seems.
Then on our second day of the firearms season she took this female coyote at 95 yards with her 308, now she wants to have a pedestal mount done. Gotta love her, pretty soon I can just sit in the shop and let her do all the hunting.:biggrin2:
I had to put my bow buck in too. The family that hunts together, stays together. Won't go hungry this year! NO, we aren't eating the yote.

Here's a picture of a buck I got with my .58 Springfield that I have used in Civil War living history events. Decent 6 point.

I dont know if this is the same one that Mark and I saw this summer when we came back from seeing Duke getting Scotts CCO's. I am missing 2 cats, we have seen them for days, LOL

Sugarmaker 11-30-2011 10:33 PM

Great pictures everyone,
Todd that is one massive buck you got there!
Tell your wife congratulations too!
Regards,
Chris

This past Summer when it was 98deg. out. This guy found a cool spot next to one of our pines in the bacck yard. He snozzzzzed there for about2 hours.

Nik,

zippy1 12-01-2011 02:39 PM

Vince, I know that cat's are the number 1 snack for coyote's, but I think a bear would take one given the chance.
Kelpie, great job on the buck with your smoke pole:beerchug:
Nik, that's a great lawn ornament! You don't even have to move it to cut the grass:biggrin2:
Chris, thanks for the congrats, it's my best buck to date. I had it officially scored last night after waiting for the 60 days drying time. It ended up being 141 1/8 typical, lost 4" since it was green scored, so it's now in the book, (Wisconsin Buck and Bear Club) see I can't enter it in Pope and Young because I shot it with a crossbow, even though I have the class A permit, class A means I can hunt with a crossbow and from a standing vehicle, (handicap)
The wife was also very jacked up about her hunt this year.
Going out this afternoon and try and get me a doe:bigthink:Try!

Sugarmaker 12-01-2011 09:28 PM

Todd,
Was able to leave work a hour early, weather was cold and clear. Passed on a doe right a closing time tonight. Nice to see some deer finally! There were about 3 or 4 deer, was getting too dark to see them well.
Good luck!
Regards,
Chris

Ewwwwww tree rats, LOL

Congrats to your son! I remember when Vince killed his first. We kinda wack them here in the yard, seeing we have prime squrell hunting out back in the woods, not to mention wild boar, bear and deer. I guess Ill need to get another Beagle to run bunnies with, mines about 13 yrs old, but he still wants to go, but his poor leggs just wont go as fast. Hes not in pain, so thats why I just cant bring my self to put him down. My Black and Tan, shes getting bad. Its just a matter of time with her. She too is 13. If I let her run too long, she starts to wimper and will just lay down.

Some pictures from Saturday in PA wood lot.
Antler restrictions were supposed to swamp us with huge racked deer. Well there are a few but it had been 10 years since I was able to get a chance to have one just walk up to me this young buck made a mistake. It is a seven point, 125 lb live weight. We need three point on aat least one side disregarding the brow tines. Taken with one double lung shot from Remington 7600 chambered in 30-06. Only about 60 yards out. This stand about two big stone throws from the back door.
Will be making kielbasi, jerky and burger tomorrow night. Not a big rack but will make some "good eatin"! Makes the third deer we have processed this year, Eric (son) and Nic (grandson) both got deer in archery.
Todd Congratulations on the doe!
And I Love the pictures of the young hunter with the squirrels!
Regards,
Chris

Man that is a young deer! I know at our place in Green Co when they first did the antler thing we saw the heck out of 4 and 6 points. The second year we were killing nice big deer with nice even racks. I still see some 6 points that are out side the ears and wish I could shoot them. I think the kids on the youth hunts can kill them, but not living there any more Im not up on the regs.

Your stand looks like a view from mine. Im in a maple grove with thick pines in front of me, thick stuff to my right and a nice big feild off to my left with food in them. Heres the field I hunt to my left. Most of the times I get them in the trees before they get to the field.

Yes we are! We are blood brothers of the good mother earth:beer2: I for one kill animals because I enjoy eating them. I get a real feeling of accomplishment in hunting. In a way it brings me back to a time when we as people didn't rely on someone to make our food for us, grocery and fast food.
Theres nothing like it, (hunting) it's a undescribable high, harvesting a deer, field dressing and processing it into bite size portions. Last night we took the trimmings from my doe and ground it into hamberger, and had the tenderloins for supper:beerchug: oh so good!
So far we've almost processed 900# of deer through my shop, between the wife and my buddies and me, and we've got two more to do tonight.
Good job on the buck Chris, eating good in the neighborhood:biggrin2:

MrGitrdone41 12-06-2011 07:24 PM

Great pics guys! I did not have a good season this year. The first day of youth gun my gun fell out of my stand and broke the stock off!:bash2:. So i went out and bought a new Remington 870 combo 12ga for gun season. I saw two that i walked right up behind at 10yds! But i didn't see anything for the whole week. What i was mad about was i have 7 high powered rifes and one shotgun. In Ohio you have to hunt with a shotgun! My other hobby with other than cubs is guns by the way lol!:biggrin2:

Sugarmaker 12-06-2011 10:25 PM

MrGitrdone41,
Guns and Cubs Sounds good to me too!

Duke,
I guess I hadn't noticed the similarity until I looked a little closer. Todd is the better looking brother!

Todd, (Bro)
That's a lot of meat through your shop! We are at about the 375 lb mark right now, That may be it for the year unless this new jerky recipe is a big hit, then the .50 cal. Hawken muzzle loader may be pressed into action after Christmas for the late season:). I saved out some steaks and the back straps and want to try to cook them on the grill. Any good recipes for venison fillets on the grill?
We only shoot what we are going to eat. It had been several years for me and the last one was a nice doe taken from a stand in the same wood lot. (I picked this house because it looked like a good deer crossing.) We have killed several deer in these woods each year for the last 26 years. (so we are part of the contributing factor in the deer herd population decline)
I agree with you Todd, hunting helps put me in touch with our food supply. I have been helping butcher since I was old enough to walk, guess its in the blood.

Vince,
That looks like a great hunting spot. Yes whack them just in the edges of the woods.

We have bigger deer in the area but the luck of the draw dealt me this one and I was pleased.
Regards,
Chris

Hello, Yea 6" backstrap, garlic pepper all around and burn both sides, about 10 minutes each. Let set a few minutes and cut in half. Like 2 pieces of filet minyon with a little pink juices running. UMMM good. I like them yearling renewable resorces. Also slice 1/8" thick round steaks for hot buttered steak sandwitchs, mushrooms, onions, baby swiss etc. UMMMM. Mike

Missouri Deer Hunting

There I was, 1/4mile from my hunting area & there he was. From my car window. :bash2: Saw him 3 more X but could not get a shot that I was satisfied with.:bigthink: Didn't want to take a chance with not having that sure-100% shot.

So what do I do? I made it a point it was him & only him to take. Passed up 20/30 doe's, smaller (basket type) bucks but was determined to go home with him.

As it worked out I went home meatless, boy was the wife pee'd off. She warned me NEVER EVER do this again.

Try 1 or 2 steaks & marinate overnight in Russian or Catalina salad dressing. Great taste for a change. Never ever overgrill them, a slight pink inside is the only way to go.

Mickb72, the sandwitch sounds good! I'll have to try it.
Something else we like around here is the roast out of the hind quarters. Now I'm not a big roast fan till I tried this. Take one roast and rub it with salt and pepper and put it in the slow cooker with some beef stock, (I like Emeril Lagasse's beef stock) and a table spoon of barbecue sauce, fire it up in the morning on high, then later in the afternoon drop it down to low. Take the meat out and shred it and add some flour to the juices and make it into a gravey, add the meat back in and re-heat. Butter some buns and put in the oven, to warm them, put your meat on, good eats:beerchug:

Sugarmaker 12-07-2011 07:54 PM

Guys,
Thanks!
Now two things are making my mouth water! Your recipes, and the fact that in the kitchen there are two dehydrators going full bore with about 7 lb of shooter jerky cooking! Another 2 Lb to go when thats done tomorrow. I need to go out to the sugarhouse and get started packing a couple of 2.5 inch casings with kielbasi tonight About 3 lb each. Those will be ready to cook on Friday or Saturday. YuM! I have to try a back strap on the grill soon too!
We make a very good Maple Mustard and a Maple BBQ sauce that is very good with the Kielbasi, some NY sharp cheese and a Ritz cracker!
Regards,
Chris

Duke, it's all good, never thought you came across anyway. Never thought about it twice,
I did this before but I must have lost it some way or another, so I'll do it again. My wife Nancy had another first this year, she got her first deer with a smoke pole. 7 1/2 or 8 1/2 year old doe, (age by tooth wear) 118#
Eric, good luck on the hunt.

Todd that doe your wife got looks like a toad from the pic.
I got one at a farm up in NW PA a few years back and I went to drag her (already field dressed) and thought she was caught up on something but she was just that big. Congrats to your wife! And thanks for the good luck as so far I have left numerous doe walk so far but Saturday I'm not going to be so nice, LOL.

Todd,
Tell Nancy congratulations on the doe with the muzzle loader. That is a big deer! I like shooting them, muzzle loader that is. We miss way more deer than we get, but man we have a lot of fun.
Eric,
Sounds like its getting to be serious meat time! Maybe these pictures will help? Now if I could get the smell to come thru too!
Broke out a new dehydrator (white trays) and it looks like its working at least twice as fast as the old one.
Stuffed the two sticks (3 lb each) of Kielbasi, which will be ready to cook in a day or so. The different casings colors are just what I had, same mix in both. We should be eatin' high on the hog when all the kids and grand kids are here for Christmas vacation! I had to try a piece of this with the new jerky recipe and it is GOOD! A friend that I hunt with has been trying to get me to make it for years. I usually just eat what he brings to work:) It almost tastes like a late season doe could be in the plan too! We general slice strips of steaks and back straps into very thin cuts and then marinate for several days, then dehydrate. The shooter works good.
Regards,
Chris

Handloaded ammo, with my Dillon 550B,
Compensating scope for bullet drop,

Built it myself with a bunch of itty bitty parts.
