Always Room for Jello!! And More Weight!!

I have been looking for for a month for wheel weights for my QL 1000, SW Virginia ain't Central PA. No luck finding weights.

Saturday I was putting the sleeve hitch on my "new" 1000 and noticed there is some wasted space between the frame and the fenders.

I went to the shop today (20 miles from the Cub) and noticed I had a "drop" of 3/4" x10" steel bar. I thought , what the heck, that might make a weight.

From my memory and what was left of that drop I cut some weights.

I put the part in the torch and did a quick program to cut two parts out of each drop I had.

The torch moves to the start position and preheats.

Attachment 17625

After 15 seconds, the oxygen comes on, the torch starts cutting 20 inches per minute.

Attachment 17626

Cutting in the second direction, the parts fall off.

Attachment 17627

The finished parts ready to drill mounting holes.

Cadplans,
That is a nice cutting machine. I would love to have something like that for heavy fab work. Interested to see how you finish and mount them too.
Regards,
Chris

That looks like the PERFECT tool for ones neighbor to own :-)

A close up of the "as cut" edge. No clean up needed!!

Three years after I built this machine, I added a plasma torch for 1/4" and thinner parts.

Attachment 17639

The plasma also cuts stainless and aluminum.

The plasma also cuts with 3-4 times faster IPM speeds.

Building this cutting machine was my favorite all time "do it yourself" project.

The edge you show is cut by oxy/acet?

What a nice smooth cut!

Almost, Oxy/propane, that is why it has a cleaner cut.

Methos 11-22-2011 08:38 PM

Sweet machine! Love that smooth cut edge!

Nice torch set up

I am a retired boilermaker and was a welder, burner for 35 years. Mostly all free hand burning with some track burner set up. Would like to see you set up, looks interesting.

Took a WAG at the correct hole locations and drilled some 0.72" holes to bolt on the weights.

This is the area I plan to fill with steel for weight.

Attachment 17704

Between the frame and the inner wheel well. Wasted space, now.

I am also interested in your torch/plasma set up.

Is it a kit or did you build it from scratch and source all the parts yourself?

I've seen kits like this for plasma torches but have never heard from a user.

Do they do everything they claim, are they reliable, durable and accurate?
How easy are they to program?
Basically are they worth the money or just a headache to use and maintain?
If they are easy to operate and maintain, they could be useful, fun and one could possible make a few bucks to recoup some of the cost.

(The weight project is cool too. Can't wait to see the finished results)

CADplans 11-24-2011 11:59 AM

I built mine almost from scratch. I wanted "usable" holes for 1" pins, and highly repetitive parts.

The ones sold at a reasonable cost look like (and are advertised as) great tools to make artwork. I ain't usually an artist, although I have made that type torch cutting.

My machine is supposed to cut up to 14" thick steel, 2" is the thickest I have ever cut.

I will try to get better photos of the machine.

Thats a cool idea about wasted space. Just wondering, do you want to move over here by me? I need a neighbor with cool tools! :D

Like most other things at my age, I know how much snow I can (can't) handle. :biggrin2:

AND 44.7kW of snow is my limit!

Well, I got the 55 pounds of weights installed in their hidden location.

Attachment 17914

My WAG of the hole locations worked out just fine, I didn't have to match drill through anything important.

Attachment 17915

With the addition of my hidden weights, sleeve hitch, spring assist and modified
hitch I guess I have added 100 pounds to the back of the QL 1000.

Attachment 17916

Now the mice and mud will have a harder time getting in the battery box!!

Attachment 17917

I also changed the 6 bolts that holds the transmission to the frame to grade 8 just in case that connection does not like all that additional weight!!

If it ever snows, I have a set of loaded 10.50's with chains standing by, so with a quick tire swap, the QL 1000 should be ready to go.

Until then, the QL will do light yard work duty, waiting for spring, complete dis-assembly, and a new paint job.

LarryW 11-28-2011 09:37 PM

Nice work as always!:beerchug:

now they need to be powder coated cub yellow so they dont rust or bleed on the tractor :bigthink:

Methos 11-29-2011 11:44 AM

You did good! Lots of extra weight in a little space. The mice are going to be mad!:biggrin2:
