I know ill catch some razing from you purists out there but I gave my 1450 a transplant couple weeks back. Really like the end result....smooth and uses much less fuel. Made for a terrific hybrid ! :biggrin2:

Looks like a very clean install! Nice work.

Grant Powers 09-28-2011 10:24 AM

I like it! What model/HP is the replacement engine? Did the 1450 PTO bolt on or did you need to use another? Are you going to try to fit your side covers, with modifications, back on the tractor or leave them off? Thanks, gp

Used an adapter plate for the pto ... Its a Vanguard 18hp v-twin engine, the port(left) side side panel does fit but the starboard will need some work. Probably get another panel to play with, want to retain them.

It was a fun project .... nothing was cut or bent to fit so with about 3-4 hrs time the original K series could be droped back in without to much hassel.
With the 28 lbs/ft of torque this engine generates it pulls like no tomorrow.

I relaly like this set up. Nice job!

I was just joking with you.....There your cubs, so have as much fun as you want. It's not like you are butchering them up or anything like that....and even if you did, that's your perogative!

I think your repowered cub looks great, good work! I am considering making a tractor out of a hodge podge of different models and repowering it. I bought a 6.5 hp motor at harbor freight for the boys go kart, it is a predator brand engine, well they also have a 13 hp complete with electric start for less than $350...I am sure you could catch it on sale for much less than that. I am really impressed with one I put on the go kart, but really haven't compared the 13 to a kohler to see if it is feasible or not. The owners manual for the 6.5 also has all the specs for the 13, all I would need to do is measure/ compare it to a kohler. The predator engines are not a Honda clone, but are very similar to a Honda, the go kart should be a good test for it's durability.

tubbyfirefighter 09-30-2011 08:37 AM

Looks good. Did you hard mount it or keep the iso's?:beerchug:

scgtguy 09-30-2011 09:59 AM

1450 / v-twin

tubbyfirefighter , its hard mounted to bottm of frame rail flanges, needed to raise it 1.25 inches to have the drive shaft level and also to allow the oil filter to clear the frame rail. Even tho its hard mounted its very smooth due to the v-twin design.

looking at this.....i have to wonder if there's much difference in the room in a 1250, 1450 wide frame and a 149. it looks like with a little work this could be done to a 149 too. i don't ave a 1250, or a 1450 to compare to my 149, so i would welcome comment. nice swap. looks excellent. no sin there. bet you use less fuel, run smoother, and have tons more torque.

Merk 10-01-2011 07:21 PM

Looks good with the Van Guard engine in it.

You need to run dual stacks...one out each side.

Keep us posted on how this set up works.

I happen to have a 149 and some QL's sitting around, the frames are very similar, the main difference is the QL's bottom frame rails are a bit lower to account for the addition of the motor mounts/ isomounts. I am thinking he said he had to add spacers under the engine for clearance issues and for driveshaft alignment, the bottom side of the 149 frame is flat, the QL frames are angled, so shimming should be easier. The bigger issues in your idea to use this engine will be wiring issues and getting the pto work. I don't see the wiring being that big a deal, but I really doubt the 149 pto change be adapted to this style engine, you most likely will need to find an electrically activated pto like those used in the QL, again doable, but just thought these issues should be brought up.

I was able to weasel in a 1.5 gallon tank .... used the original mounts with some modification .... this gives over a 1 hr run time. I f anyone is interested I could take a few shots for you.

Thanks! I've pondered this swap before. I like the Vanguard engines.

thankyou for the info/advice. shiming another engine up shouldn't be a huge problem. not using the 149 pto......i can get over that too. i have two electric ptos. 1 from a 2166 cub, und 1 from another donner cub. both are 1 inch shafts. now i have to do is find a motor.

Cool Brian - I missed this thread until you noted it in another thread about transplants in a QL.

Where did you get the Vanguard, is it new? looks like it...

I wouldnt worry too much about the purist....Check this out in the JD...and the choke cable...even though I painted it yellow...At least it is a Kohler in there....Out of a 2186.....Using the CC PTO also.:beerchug:
