Breather position on 1450 rear end cover?

Hi,

I replaced hydro gasket on my 1450 today. During test run with fenders off I noticed that oil was bubbling out from brass breather that is on cover plate on top off rear end(plate is attached to rear end with four bolts). And can be installed in two positions. Now I am wondering what is correct orientation of breather? Should it be near diff ring gear or near hydro pump drive gear? I tried checking pics of cub rear ends on Ebay but those did not have brass breathers on this cover plate at all. Is this brass breather only on last QL's only?

I can't see a breather on this plate you are talking about, but that doesnt mean it isn't blocked in the picture. Hope this helps, and this pic is of a 107 rear. Could have changed since yours, but im trying . http://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/a...1&d=1301859599

Yes I am talking about top cover not rear cover and mine does have brass breather there.... Hmmm this is getting interesting. I'll post a pic of it tomorrow it looks very much like it has been there always not a DIY install.

Just noticed that you're in Finland. Are cubs popular there? Is there a great story on how you acquired your cub?:beerchug:

Sorry - off topic - but Wild Bill, what are the make / size of the rear tires on your 1450?

I was going to ask about this in another thread, but since we are on the subject, what can a guy do if it has been painted over? My recently acquired 129 has been painted in the past and the brass breather is completely sealed over with a coat of paint. I thought about using a dremel and wire brush or grinding wheel on it, but am thinking since it is pourous, the paint most likely saturated it sealing it up. I don't know if paint stripper would work or not, I prefer not using this method, would be hard to keep from removing the surrounding paint. I was thinking about adding a breather to the top plate as well, it could be removed for drilling (keeping the shavings out of the gear case would be best). I was thinking about a breather either out of an automobile rear end or transmission.

Can the original breather be removed and replaced? Looking it over, I can not tell how it was installed.
Just tossing this out there for everyones opinions, thanks!

OK the pics:

1. You can see breather on top cover:

http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u...0/CIMG1166.jpg

2. You can see instead of a breather there is "blind" plug installed on oval shaped part of rear end casting:

3. Whole setup:

So anyone seen breather installed on top cover like this? And on this pic I have rotated cover so breather is at rear right corner. It was on front left corner earlier but oil bubbled out of it when hydro was running full forward.

And william:

No IH cubs were never marketed here. So I know only two + mine in whole country. Story is that I needed a small and solid tractor for my yard work(snow during winter and grass at summer). I did some research and ended up buying 1450 at Ebay from Florida. A friend of mine who lives in Florida shipped tractor to Finland.

If that is a PO modification, it was done very well....it looks to be factory installed. What does the bung the breather is installed in look like from the bottom side? Thanks for the pics!

FWIW:
I had a similar situation on my 782 inasmuch as I did a quick swap of the hydro.
Not wanting to take the time to drain the hyguard fluid and replace it,
I just removed the necessary bolts/linkages and rolled it back and stood it up on the rear cover plate.
Thus the hydro input shaft was pointing straight up and no hyguard leaked out when I separated the hydro from the differential.
A quick gasket change, and hydro swap and it was back together.

Afterward I noticed a few ounces of oil had seeped from the vent when it was in the stand up position.
When I operated it for a while, I noticed oil bubbling up out of the sintered vent, as it was saturated with oil while in the vertical position.
It continued to seep for a few usage cycles till it finally cleared it self out.
Possibly this is your problem?

Well it looks as good as other side. There was no welding seam it looked like it was just pressed HARD to a bit tight hole so it had "welded" itself together.

Well if I rotate this plate to its original position then hydro input gear throws oil directly to breather(and it bubbles out). But when it is rotated like this breather is on top of ring gear(and it does not bubble). Hmmm.. Do I have one of the very latest QL's or why is breather installed differently? I'll post serial no later. And yes of course I have checked Hytran fluid level as I replaced rear cover gasket and also oils right after replacing hydro gasket. And yes level is correct.

Yes this might be it. If you look at first pic you can see that there is also "almost drilled" spot on center of top cover. Also dealer might of noticed this and it was their repair for it. January 1979....:bigthink: Hmmm I am from March 1979 so this thing is only couple months older than I am :beerchug:
