Added more IH equipment
Ok I have a problem!
On the way to help a friend this morning I remembered a Cub setting along the road, near Union City PA. It was still there, so I stopped and spoke with the owner. I took a look at it and it is a 147 that has had a very rough life. It needs everything. Not sure it can be saved? Maybe with you guys to help:) Anyway the guy said make a offer. I did and he said it was mine. The 147, with wheel weights, a 42 in snow blower and a 42 inch mower deck. All of this stuff has been setting outside for quite some time and is in rough shape. The 14 hp motor was not froze up. But the pedal for the hydro was froze in the up position?? I know these hydros are hard to move when not running so not sure how I may get it loaded. The 147 tractor and deck has been painted red where the yellow would be. I would doubt that this 147 was painted red originally??? I have only seen yellow ones. Oh I did break the news to the wife and I am still allowed to sleep in the house:) She has put up with me for 40 years, she knows I am nuts! Hope to get this project home and get some pictures, I am not expecting much from this equipment and will be surprised if it can be brought back to working order? I thought the snow thrower might be a nice project too? And the deck may be in better shape that the one that I have just completed. Sorry no pictures yet:( Regards, Chris |
Sugarmaker
Hopefully you can get it back up and running :beerchug: |
Diz,
Thanks! I know anything can be done with enough time money and patience. This one looks like a real challenge. I did like the 147 that I bought a month ago and gave to my son. Most of the others I have bought have not been played with this much. Hope to get it home within a week. I like to work on them and try to get them at least running. This one has had the wiring system just about destroyed. Gage is out of the dash and several other things! This may be my chance to get into that area? I am better on the mechanical than electrical! I assume they sell replacement wiring harness for these Cubs? Any suggestions will be helpful! Regards, Chris |
Congrats Chris! Lots of goodies with it too! Looking forward to your pics!
|
Duke,
I am REALLY going to need help from this forum and guys like you if this red 147 will ever mow grass again:) Have a good evening! I may have to think about picking this tractor up this week. I need something to work on:) Regards, Chris |

good find sugar, let me know if you need any thing. does it have the electric lift?
|
Shouldwe,
What I need is a new tractor driven between the wheels:) Westofb, Thanks for the info on the wiring! yes it has lights and electric lift too. I will check it out. I did get it home yesterday! The wife was really pleased too:) I surprised her that is was red. This is the worst condition tractor that I have brought home. I am really considering using it as a parts tractor?? What do you guys do with the really rough ones? PO has touched or ruined just about everything. I did steal the front hangers off the mower deck to put on the deck I just completed and then bought another set from local Cub dealer. Yep I have a problem!! I will have some pictures soon. Have to do the work thing to pay for Cub stuff. I think the snow blower may be the only thing that has not been "monkey'ed up" Its pretty rusty but seemed free for part of a rotation. Back on the CUB any ideas how or why the linkages for the hydro, foot and lever are froze up? I think they may be rusted, the amp gauge is out of the dash along with the choke and lift switch. so maybe water went right into the hydro linkage??? Will look at that tonight, Just have to tear into it. I have gotten every one prior running and moving. Thats my goal. Oil in engine looks clean and fairly fresh. 14 HP guys why is there a oil filler port on the left side of the block? This has a nice DIGO turf tire on the rear on the left side 12 x 10.5 x 23. Do you guys know any thing about those? The other rear tire is junk. Would like to get a big set of AG tires for those rims. Sorry for all the questions, Nice day in ERIE PA, should be home working on a Cub Cadet! Regards, Chris |
My 149 has the oil filler/ dipstick tube built into the cam cover on the left side (as seen from sitting on it). Yours is a series older, so I don't know where it would be. Good luck with the project!
|
My 147 has the filler tube on the top right side and the dipstick down on left side (sitting on the tractor)
|
Thanks guys on the oil filler tube and dip stick orientation. Yes thats what I have, Just not used to these big blocks yet.
Update. The engine is out on the floor. I pulled the head and when replacing the head bolts I dropped one of the washers down into the flywheel area. So I pulled the motor off and removed the screen and fished out the washer. Another question: The engine was setting on a slant resting on the sump and leaning towards the PTO . This morning there was a puddle of oil on the floor that looks like it came from the front crank seal area? Should that be a leak path with the engine tipped that direction? Also I think the engine was over filled above the dip stick line. Some good news: The piston is stamped STD and had a good looking smooth cylinder wall and no piston slop. The valves and seats look good. Maybe this thing will run? Also got the hydro linkage working again with lots of blaster. Electric lift had water in it?? Not sure that is going to be salvaged? Pictures coming of the red machine. Goal: Get it running and moving on its own, and try to keep the input cost to a minimum:) Regards, Chris |

Some shots of the snow blower for the Cub/s.
Seems to roll over part way chain may be rusted stiff?? Haven't looked at it yet. Seems to be all there but will let the experts here tell me about this attachment. This was hooked to the RED 147 because it had a very short belt still on the tractor, which I assume was the drive belt for the snow blower. Regards, Chris |
nice 147 chris, i was expecting a little worse. the qa42a thrower seems to be all their. i really dont want to think about that yet, do you mind putting it away for about 6 months. nice find!! o ya do you still plan on going to the seagertown steam engine show? My brother and i hope to make it i am sure we will have at least on tractor their, may be 3. hope to see ya their.
|
Nice 147, I like the red and white color scheme. :beerchug:
|
Shouldwe,
The pictures do not describe the condition. The only thing that may not have been, bent rusted, busted, or broken so far was the STD piston:) I will be attending the show in Sagertown. Not sure when exactly yet. I will let you know as that firms up. I may even enter some of the Cubs for fun? Hope to see you there too! The Red and White 147 is kind of growing on me:) It might look good that combo. I have not searched the forum, I am sure someone has pictures of a restored one done in red and white too? Friend of mine and his brother are deep in Wheel Horse machines and he likes working on these size tractors much better than antique cars which have to be always for show, these tractors can get dirty and are supposed too!:) Regards, Chris |
Update on the snowblower. I know its a little early:)
I sprayed some WD40 on the end shaft bearings and the chain and its free rolling. Chris |
I met several very nice cub owners in western Ohio Sunday at the Wayne Tractor show on 322.
I was able to get a few parts for the 147 and now have a source for some more Cub parts also. Good used grill, shifter handle. (also got a hood ornament for the 102. On the 147 I have pulled the carb and cleaned it up need to stop and get the bowl gaskets tomorrow. Not sure how far I am going to go with the 147 clean up? Have de-greased the engine and the frame and found many areas that need attention. I did straighten all the wrinkles in the fenders and may be able to make them presentable. The right foot rest was bent down on the outer front corner about 1 inch and I have that back in position. Removed the wheel weights. I do have a handful of parts cleaned, primed and painted. So that's a start. I guess if any tractor needs help this one does:) The engine will get a good wire brushing. primed and painted prior to going back in. I guess that means the rest of the tractor will need to be cleaned up too. I will try to post some pictures. This is not going to be a restoration project my wife keeps telling me! Hope you had a great Fourth! Regards, Chris |

I believe I will keep this tractor as a red and white version. All the yellow will now be red, and the white will remain white / off white. Found some nice looking rattle can red at Wally World and have the flywheel shroud cleaned primed and painted. Looks good. Some pictures next week. I did pick up carb gaskets and points and condenser at Cub dealer in Centerville. Regards, Chris |
No comments on the red and white theme?
Chris |
Yes, as a matter of fact, IH painted the "test" Original Cub Cadets redand white, then changed to the yellow/white colors. But only about 25 of them. I too like the dark, sorta red color on the 147 myself! Doggone it! I was planning on the Wayne tractor show, as I'am not far from it. But I did come across a gentalman named Greg who has the creeper I'am looking for with shaft for 175.00. My uncle and wife went, so I put the word out. I guess it is a HECK of a show, did you see the big motor and was it running? Sorry, you have a nice 147, It dont look as bad as I thought! Cheers! Sorry, I dont believe for sure if anybody has any red O's. But the basic Ih red was a option of color, then scrapped? Not trying to mislead!
|
John,
The 147 has many nice PO mod's (not), will try to work through them and not spend a arm and leg. I think Greg was the guy I met too. The Wayne show was very good. We try to go each year. You need to come to the Pioneer Steam And gas show July 14 and 15 at Sagertown PA just off I-79 and Rt 198 interchange. Cubs are the feature tractors along with all Corn Binders. I think any paint on the 147 will look good. Interesting that they did paint some early models red and white. too! I have had several "red and white" restoration projects over the years, a antique buggy, and a 1955 Ford Crown Victoria. I will post some pictures too see what you think! Regards, Chris |
So long as the red is IH/Farmall red, and white is a close match to IH white (it's not too difficult to find the correct colors) it's fine in my book. Seeing "pre red" (1932 is when the red came out I think) IH tractors kind of bugs me, I'd rather see them in the correct colors (granted, they're not as pretty. Gray. Yawn...zzz...zzz...)
Each to their own. If everyone thought like me, it'd be pretty boring and there'd be nothing to debate about.:beer2: The most important thing about paint is prep. :) |
AMC,
Thanks for the comments! I do Appreciate those and consider all of them too! Well I may not meet your specs? I will post some shots next week for review. Since the Cub collection is growing and this one had been red when I brought it home, It just kind of grew on me. I agree that the prep is the key to good paint job. I have done finished work on cars but will probably not go to the same level for the Cub. Still like to have these looking good. Regards, Chris |
Guys, 147 update!
Almost afraid to post with out pictures, but would you believe me that I have been working on the 147!:) I promise to post some shots of the progress. I have been working to about 10:00 each night on it and am too pooped to post when I get in. Some of the moves: Pulled PTO ( may nee new outer casting as PO ruined one hole) Pulled starter drive pulley ( needed slight amount of heat and new pullers) Pulled flywheel (required new flat puller) Welded guard over Elec lift Pulled steering wheel. Here is a partial list of the parts removed cleaned primed painted and set aside. gas tank pivot bracket to engage PTO in lower grill casting gas tank bands throttle linkage air cleaner support air cleaner cover starter brace of engine valve cover tin covering flywheel support plate for muffler (welded crack) rods and turnbuckle for PTO engagement small tins for carb side and opp-side screen for flywheel governor linkage coil mount bracket for regulator and hood support cover for shifter hole pulley for starter gen on engine flywheel Cleaned and rebuilt carb Cleaned and degrease elec lift, ( still needs work) cleaned fuel sediment bowl and valve. continue to clean and degrease engine as parts come off. Hood has been stripped inside and out and straightened, primer and filled, sanded and primed, more work required. Pulled off the fenders and foot pads, ( Used the welding on a nut to the top of the round headed bolts, which worked great). Started to strip the fenders but may have them blasted? Yikes! I will have some pictures! Really I will! Remember its going to be IH red and white so don't be shocked! Regards, Chris |
Wow Chris, you've been busy! Thanks for the update! :beerchug:
|
You have been busy Chris!!
|
I can't believe you got that much done without the pics to back it up!!!!!
j/k, Chris keep up the good work! By the way, I have a sign shop just a stone throw from my house if you would like a hood decal with red stripe instead of the factory blue, check out my build thread "Cub 149 Resto-mod" for pics if how mine turned out. |
Jeff,
I like that idea of the red and white decals. I think that would look real nice. do you have an idea of price? I will keep that in mind as I get closer to that portion of the project. Guys its not that I dont have pictures I just cant get the time to post them:) carving out a couple minutes prior to work to drop an note. I did "split" the tractor last night frame from the rear end. Much old oil and grease needed removed prior to some new paint. I do need advice on removing the 5/8 dia pin that the front axle pivots on. I drove out the small cross pin. But the shaft does not seem to want to move. Thoughts? BFH? Regards, Chris |
Chris,
I'd be happy to check on it for you, I paid $25.00 for mine, but I had to pay for some kind of art set up fee or what not, probably can get them cheaper than that. If you like the ones I have, I could have them change the 149 to 147, I will just swing by and ask them and let you know. |
Sugarmaker, did you build that 4-wheel cart I see in your avatar? I need something just like that, with some big ol' side boards for leaves. That, or I may try one of those yard sweepers to see if that will work around here.
|
Chris keep working we'll wait on the pics no matter how bad it is on us.:biggrin2:

TheSaturnV,
I bought that Agri-fab wagon about 20 years ago at Lowes. Just did a clean up and new rubber this spring and designed and built the folding side-boards from shelving material and some small "u" bolts attach them. Not sure if the wagon is still made? I will press this wagon into service in the next few weeks moving 6 cord of wood to the house for winter. westofb, I am a ways from needing the decals but the price doesn't sound to bad. Thanks for the info. CC1650Dave, Funny I ask things and usually figure out a way to do things. Well the pivot pin was so warn it was locked in position. But when I turned the frame upside down the pin taped right out! I need a new 5/8 dia pivot pin! Guys thanks for being patient on the pictures. I have some good ones and have been making some progress on the "Red 147". Stripped the paint off the rear end. Opened the rear cover and drained the fluid and cleaned out the bottom of the case. ( Have to get a new case gasket). Pounded out dents in the rear cover. Removed the hitch which needs work. (WHAT DOES'NT ON THIS TRACTOR!!@!) Cleaned primed and painted the read end, it looks good. Will install a new trans filter and new HI-tran fluid. Question. The spring that pushes down the button valves is broke. do most folks fix these or leave them alone? This is the lever that is suposed to allow you to move the tractor when not running. I will need to get new brake pads. Any hints on getting the best value? Frame is stripped to the bare sheet metal. Getting the cross shaft with the cast collars out took a few extra minutes some blaster and a hot wrench. The frame has been stripped and 80% wired brushed. (using the Aircraft remover and lots of elbow grease. (should have sent it to the blasters too:) Many many small parts to clean and prepared for paint. I might have a rolling frame by end of august.:) I think its going to look pretty good. Lots more moves to make as you folks that have restored these know! The wife is getting a little concerned:) Parts from sand blasting should be ready this week. Here is a shot of the fenders prior. Forgot to mention I had to cut out the bottom due to major rust holes. Will weld in a new bottom from .100 thick steel, then drill the attachment holes. Regards, Chris |
Chris, checked on the decals for you, the price was $25.00, they stated that was a minimum charge the had to set up the machine to run off a set. The decals are not layered levels of vinyl, the are done with some type of printer, I guess a giant laserjet, they do look really impressive though.
You asked about brakes, I am not sure if you have internal or external brakes. If you have external, look for a post made by Mattg, in his signature there is a link to his website. He has a how to on relining your brake shoes, you buy some brake pad material from Mcmaster Carr and replace the linings, much much cheaper than new brake pads, the ones I found were ridiculous in price, I am thinking like $40 per pad!!!! Matt's how 2 is pretty simple to do. |
147R update
1 Attachment(s)
Jeff thats exactly what I was looking for on the brakes. I will do the research!
Thanks! Here is a brief update on the 147R! I have been working every day on this project and its a bigger project than I had realized! When I get done at 10:00each night I am to pooped to post. But its fun, and I have learned a lot too. Thanks to all the folks on here that have provided ideas and engouragement! The picture is of the 147R that is about 30% complete. Hopefully a picture says several hundered words:) ( Note the Tru powers will be mounted on the rear and the tri ribs are mounted on the front end). Sorry for the fuzzy picture from my cell phone:) I have a lot of items in progress as in dissassembly, cleaning, sandblasting, paint stripper, welding, grinding, repairing, filling, painting, and reassembly. The red is starting to grow on me and I believe will be a pretty good looking NF GT. Things I have done recently: - Currently trying to save the shifter column unit. - Broke down rear tires and stripped the rims for sanding. - front axle in place with better used center pin to remove some slop. - all mower deck attachments cleaned and painted. - starter/ Gen cleaned and checked by local shop and ready for paint. - New voltage reg. - clean and check of the elec. lift ready for paint. - Frame stripped and painted and re attached to rear end. - Pedal assembly re-installed. - Most small parts cleaned primed and painted. Regards, Chris |
Folks,
Had problems with this last post ( pic). Shows Westofb as the last person to post but actually I put up the last post yesterday. Anyway! brief update on the 147R Worked on the rear rims last night one has been filled, sanded and in primer. Should look real good in white with the big Trupowers on them. I PMed Matt G to find info on the brakes and relining with materials from McMaster Carr. I need to get on that so I can get the brakes back on and then the wheels ands get back to a rolling frame. I am going to put on a three point hitch system and need to get the bottom "U" bracket so I can close up the rear end on this 147R. Side note: Used the 86 Cub to haul supers from the apiary last night too! Regards, Chris |
Nice work, Chris!
