Starting the assembly of my 128 K301

I received my governor gear and cross shaft yesterday from Chris Westfall. This is what I have been waiting for. Well waiting for the $$ to get it ordered..LOL. I took a few pics and will post them thru my progress in the assembly. If someone see's something I have done wrong or could do different please feel free to speak up. Better to catch it now than later. :biggrin2:

_DX3_ 04-16-2011 02:57 PM

The cam end play should fall between .005/.020
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/b...r/DSC01900.jpg

We have .007 well within spec
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/b...r/DSC01901.jpg

Marked the Crankshaft timing mark:

Got the bearing plate installed and setting up to check Crankshaft end play:
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/b...r/DSC01908.jpg

End play should be between .003/.020. I ended up having to install 3 gasket shims:
Finally obtained a .010 reading:

Great pics of the rebuild! Looks like your doing great, keep up the good work!

_DX3_ 04-16-2011 04:29 PM

Thanks a lot Jeff, I enjoy doing stuff like that. Been awhile since I have tinkered with a motor.

Methos 04-16-2011 05:03 PM

DWayne awesome pics! Your well on your way now. Looking forward to more awesome pics of your progress!:IH Trusted Hand:

Im surprised greatly that no one spoke up about the plastic gov gear. Go for the cast iron gear if you can find it!

_DX3_ 04-16-2011 07:08 PM

I figure the original plastic gear lasted 37 years of weekly use, this should do fine. It will see some use, but not like it used too. What I have to find is a cast iron deep sump oil pan. I don't like the aluminum one. It has some wear at one of the frame bolt holes.

william1041200 04-16-2011 07:25 PM

hey DX3. Guess What I have? I would trade for a CI flat pan!

Mooner 04-16-2011 10:30 PM

DWayne, looks great! Thanks for sharing your photos of the progress.

_DX3_ 04-16-2011 10:45 PM

Thanks Mooner, I am hoping to have my piston and rings Monday or Tues. Then I can pretty much finish it up, with the exception of some minor things.

_DX3_ 04-18-2011 09:55 PM

Got my new piston and rings in today. Got the rings gapped correctly this time. I got a little over zealous on the compression ring of my other set :bash2:

I lubed up the cylinder with oil and lubed up the piston and rings with oil and everything went together nicely. I have to get some sandpaper and get the head flattened from having it surfaced. Grrrrrr  I also scored a Cast Iron oil pan and am expecting it this week I hope. I should also be getting some new sand blasting nozzles in and I can start getting the sheet metal and engine outter parts cleaned up and ready for paint. After that all I have to do is get the stuff to rebuild the clutch and to rebuild the PTO.

_DX3_ 04-28-2011 05:10 PM

The sun is finally shining for the first time in days. NO RAIN!! Time to work on the motor some more. Today was paint day and minor assembly of tins. I also finished surfacing the head correctly after the machine shop messed it up.

With some of the tins and linkage assembled:

Can anyone see what I forgot to do in this pic?
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/b...r/DSC01920.jpg

I also was finally able to get the gas tank painted again for the third time. So far third time is the charm :).

CC1450 04-28-2011 05:45 PM

lookin' good! Did you forget to tape off the crank shaft? Just a guess. I love trivia lol

_DX3_ 04-28-2011 06:00 PM

Nope, wasn't that. But you are warm. :biggrin2:

CC1450 04-28-2011 06:55 PM

I scrolled back up and saw you have a pic of it taped, haha. I'll let some other folks playing along at home toss out some guesses from here before my brilliance makes a fool of me further. :)

Methos 04-28-2011 07:29 PM

Looks awesome DWayne!

Install the s/g bracket before putting the pulley on? If I remember right the bolt won't go in with the pulley in the way.:bigthink:

That was my answer too, that is what I get for staying outside all day enjoying the nice weather! In the last month I have disassembled 2 motors and vividly remember that darn s/g pulley being in the way of the bolt.

Dwayne you motor is looking very nice, paint looks great! I am still waiting on the machine shop and some parts to come in....waiting sucks!

_DX3_ 04-28-2011 09:15 PM

Yep it is definitely in the way and I knew it, but got carried away and well, while I was taking the pics is when it hit me. The "Doh!" moment, LOL. I still have to get new wire harness, clutch parts, PTO parts, Front and Rear tires, and a battery. Slowly but surely making progress.

_DX3_ 05-13-2011 05:54 PM

I'll just keep posting updates about the whole 128 process. The motor came together nicely. While waiting on some $$$ for the clutch, PTO, and some other odd ball parts I have started painting each of the pieces as I can. I got started on the hood today. It was nice out this morning, so I took the Strip Eaze and made quick work of the paint on the hood. Got it primed and painted. I have the lower grill already done, I will work on the upper grill panel and and the pedestal in a couple of days. Here are some pics of the progress.

CC1450 05-13-2011 07:07 PM

hmm, paint stripper. Why didn't I think of that? Ha! Looks like it did a good job getting the old paint off.

Looks great primed and painted too! :beerchug: Keep up the great work.

_DX3_ 05-13-2011 09:09 PM

I've been very impressed with it. Found it at Ace Hardware for about $6.
It took everything off of the fuel tank and a few other small items very easily. The hood took a couple of going overs, but was not very difficult at all. I am going to use it on the rear fender panel.

ACecil 05-13-2011 10:11 PM

Looks great! Thanks for the update, DWayne! :beerchug:

For a little more money, go to an auto parts outlet (O'Reilly's, Carquest, Autozone, etc) and look for a product in a blue and white can, I think it is called air craft paint stripper. It comes in a aerosol can (they may have it in liquid form also, I always use the aerosol, less mess, easy to apply), very wicked stuff, just spray it on and you will not believe how great it works. The paint will literally pop off the tins, little to no scrapping involved, bare metal when your are done. It is funny to watch it in action, the paint actually jumps off the metal, sometimes almost instantly!

The product you used did a pretty good job, but I guarantee it doesn't hold a candle to the air craft stripper!

Paint looks great, keep up the good work!

_DX3_ 05-14-2011 10:46 AM

I'll definitely go look for some of that stuff. I am always up for easier products. Thanks. :beerchug:

Yeah that sounds like the stuff to use!

_DX3_ 06-08-2011 06:16 PM

Well thought I would give a few updates, it's been awhile since my last post. In the negative category, the ole A/C bit the dust in this 90 degree heat. Had to do something quick and ended up getting some good window units. The down side to this is I had to use money set aside to finish up the 128, :bash2:. Oh well, I have all the time in the world so no reason to get upset over it. So while I can I am trying to get all of the frame and little things cleaned and painted that I can do while just sitting around. Here are some pics of things done in the last few weeks and today.

Got the hood and front headlight grille put together:
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/b...d/DSC02124.jpg

http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/b...d/DSC02125.jpg

I got the old decal removed from the headlight panel and found several stress cracks that I had to weld up and grind down. It is now nice and straight and will work real good:
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/b...d/DSC02133.jpg

Got the hood hinge cleaned, primed and painted today also along with the headlight panel:
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/b...d/DSC02134.jpg

I was able to get the PTO lever put back into the steering tower and I took the key switch and glass beaded it and the connector ends and also the key switch cup. Looks like a new one now.
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/b...d/DSC02132.jpg

The rear fender pan was a lot of work but I think it turned out real well:
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/b...d/DSC02130.jpg

I really had no intention of splitting the frame and transmission, but somehow today while it was in the 90's I decided I needed to seperate them and get the dirt off and then prep for paint. They aren't prepped for paint yet, but I did at least get them apart, LOL. I was about wiped out after all that.

gcbailey 06-08-2011 06:34 PM

great thread.... sheesh, I'll never be able to do any engine work like that.....

_DX3_ 06-08-2011 06:48 PM

Ahhh, can't have that attitude, :)... Actually to me I would much much rather do the engine work than all the dang sanding and paint. It's drudgery for me, but I work my way thru it. I can stand all day and work on an engine. I have always been like that. Now does that mean I know what I'm doing or am good at it? Nope! LOL. This is my first Kohler I have taken apart and I am here to tell you, it is easy to work on. The Kohler manual is an awesome guide for going thru your motor. I suggest finding you an old kohler that is cheap or free and use it as a learning tool for your actual motors.

gcbailey 06-08-2011 09:10 PM

that's what I'd love to do, I just don't have the "precision" tools for the specs required for engine work. My family are carpenters and HVAC/electricians... I was scared to death with I replaced the head gasket on my 127 and rebuilt my 1st carb. It's just hard to come by parts around here, the none of the local dealers stuff any old kohler stuff and the 2 small engine shops are briggs.... I guess that's why I always end up in New York for some odd reason!!! :biggrin2:

jrr cub 06-08-2011 09:24 PM

paint work is looking great Dwayne! The fenders came out very nice. Body work has always been something that tests my patience as well but your results are worth it.

I agree! :beerchug:

_DX3_ 06-13-2011 07:22 PM

Well I pulled the transmission from the frame and got it cleaned up and got it painted. I also got the frame up on the work table and cleaned it up and sanded, primed and partially painted. Ran out of paint..:bash2:. Hoping to finish it up tomorrow. I also got a new PTO bearing and lock collar in and installed it on the motor. I'll get pictures as soon as I can. I only have the seat springs, mount and swivels to get painted. At least I can start getting some of the 128 assembled soon. Need to let the painted items set and cure for awhile.

IH Nate 06-13-2011 09:21 PM

Looks like things are moving in the right direction for you. Looking forward to seeing more pics.
