Tore out onan out of 982, broke connecting rod. Putting in a magnum 18. Rather have a mag 20 or 25 command but this will do for now. Removed tins and pressure washed. Painted. Has 500 hours. Removed broken plastic dash panel from 982 and took off perfect dash off parts IH 782 out in the graveyard. 982 coming along

Magnums are good motors. From what I can gather they're much easier to find parts for, and they're much more common. Plus many brands had them, so they're easy to find info on. I don't know how they run as the only magnum we have is all beat to hell with a blown rod.

Opposed motors are inherently smooth as the vibrations cancel themselves.
examples are Continental, Porches/VW, Corvair, Kohler, Briggs, Onan etc.etc.
Some were flatheads others ohv design.
Like any engine of proven design, they live well if cared for properly.:beerchug:

I did the same swap on my 1912 (pretty much the same as 982). I love it, this is more than a "for now" solution, it's permanent for me. The magnum 18 has plenty of power. :beerchug:

This will be my third mag 18 powered machine, have the 18 in my 582 and 682 as well. A lot of putting and rust in the carb bowl, cleaned that up, got her running lastnight, runs and sounds great! Ordered a red powder coated A frame adapter from extreme, has the sleeve hitch on one side and can put a ball to haul trailers around. Has slight leak from front bottom front hydraulic outlet

Cleaned up the head on the 1250. I actually did this last week, but forgot to post.

Edit: This was with only a wire brush, and I also cleaned the piston and valves. The build up under the exhaust valve was so bad it couldn't even seal properly.

782 Cub Starter Replacement

I've been putting this off for way too long. Today the weather here was really nice so I decided to replace the starter on my 782.

I took the left side engine tins off, took the six bolts out of the engine mount then jacked the engine up about 3/4". This gave me the room to get the bolts out of the starter then move the starter to the front grille area and drop it out the bottom. New starter went in the same way.

Took me three hours to get it done but all in all it was worth it. Starts like a champ now, I should have done this a long time ago
