Sam
After you put it thru a few miles, I'd like your opinion from a "real" motorcyclist.

From what I read, new to open wheel riders like it but some of the two wheel guys had difficulty with the upright / no lean aspect of it.

Jeff

I'll be happy to give a report. It is a little weird getting used to just turning the handle bars and I find myself leaning into a corner, doubt that I'll ever get over that. Just my quick first impression, it's not a motorcycle, more like a 3 wheeled open top car with handlebars instead of a steering wheel. :bigthink:

Jeff in Pa 12-07-2015 07:19 PM

Thanks Sam

just curious :bigthink:

Been riding a bit since I picked up the Spyder. So far I love it. Pics from the Park Way yesterday. Couple things I've found out, the factory alignment on the front end is not to be trusted. Mine was toed out making the steering shall we say a little twitchy. A few minutes with the old toe boards and had that fixed. Planned up grades are bigger sway bar and some better shocks. I have about 400 miles on it since I picked it up. Made a brake pedal extension to make it easier to get to the brake pedal. Factory design didn't allow me to be able to keep my heel on the floor boards while braking. I'll keep you guys posted as time and miles go on. :beerchug:

That's why I went this route, bought a wreck and plan to build it how I want it. Much cheaper.

Nope, not really.
Front fender, crash bar, left side foot board and fork lowers are the only parts that will require replacement. The rest is road rash repair.

You know me all too well. Gotta make it the way I want it. It has been fun and the reason I have been MIA from OCC for the last few days. :biggrin2:

Even did a little mod for the tractor lift so that the Can't Aim will fit. :beerchug:

Yellow feaver applies to more than Cub's :biggrin2: I have an '02 Suzuki DRZ 400S that I run both dirt and SuperMoto (SM) trim on. Here's a mix of old and less old pictures of the bike. It didn't get out much this year with the whole buying a house deal and spending all my time on a remodel...

Nice bike! I keep a old CRF around for when I feel the urge to go bashing through the trees.

Each summer I ride a few AMA D14 enduros.

I don't compete - I'm rather new at the two-wheel gig. Your CRF is very sharp looking. I hope someone (besides KTM) will make a 450 that is factory street legal and has the reliability of some of the greats: DR/DRZ/XR/KLR... We want performance and relieability - if it can be had. Come on Japan!!!

Until then the DRZ will have to do - I can't afford to go Orange.

Not sure the two play well together. The high revving nature of the modern four stroke, will always require "race schedule" (expensive) maintenance.

The one I posted earlier is a 250.

I did spend some time racing a 2006 Honda CRF450R, I thought it was quite reliable, for what it was. But it was too much of a handful in the woods. It was not very forgiving, when you got fatigued and made any mistakes. The 250 is plenty fast, it is more capable than the rider!

Back in the day, I was riding XR's, when XR's weren't cool!

ATK offered a kit to put the drivetrain from an XR, into one of their frames. Less than 25 were ever built, but I was one of the silly fools that built one.

The first time I built it, I used a 1986 XR600R, that I had bought new. I flogged that iteration for several years.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y24...rambles_tn.jpg

Then later rebuilt it with a 1991 donor bike, got me better forks, rear disc brake and an 18" rear wheel.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y24...iftPics001.jpg

Spent a lot of time with that motorcycle.

I sold it not long after I rode a CRF for the first time.:beerchug:

And yes, the "orange" guys (KTM) are everywhere! Every race is like a pumpkin patch, flying through the woods!

Gonna pull the carbs off this 1100 Maxim today, Im trying to sell it but theres no vacumn while cranking so its being a pita to start. I bought it last year thinking I would ride it but then found an 1100 Shadow I like better, Maxim should be an easy sell if I get it starting properly.

How does you 850 handle down the highway? I love the feel of a GS being a sporty little bike around town. Just curious because I had a 450GA that would do 45 mph max in a 10 mph headwind. I always thought it was because it was automatic until I got a 500cc Honda CX that wasn't a big fan of highway speeds either.

I am 6' even and weighed about 240lbs when I rode my 450 everywhere (10-12k a,year). I rode it from VA to OH (6.5 hour trip) once and 2 hour rides from home to school every other weekend. I could climb a 5% grade at about 60mph wound out in 4th gear. 6th gear almost never came into play till flat ground and 70mph. It is a small bike that is easy and fun to really toss around but it is no mountain carver like my 850G. It goes very well in snow due to the low amount of torque and skinny tire.

The 450GA had become a bit of a rarity, I would like to get my hands on one one day

Edit: Just realized you asked about the 850. The 850 and 1000 are pretty much identical so it is a heavy bike. It is very solid and stabile in the corners and has by far the best factory seat I have ever ridden. It has a fairly long stroke for an I4 so it is torquey from about 3k+ RPM. I long to have a 6th gear as 75mph at 5.5k is a little buzzy and noisy but the shaft drive is smooth as silk with virtually no torque slide.

Wish I would have kept it then. I traded it and the CX500 for my Shadow last year. I bought one 450ga without a title that had sat for 15 years and one that had been laid over pretty bad. I took the two of them and made one rideable bike so I was just happy to get my money out of them. All I can say after all of it is I'm glad cubs don't have valve adjustment like the gs bikes do.

Sam Mac 03-16-2016 05:39 PM

Cool bikes guys. I'd like to find an Old School bike. Thinking about a Honda CB1100. Sort of the best of the old and new. Had the Can Am RTL out the other day for the first time this year. Gonna do a couple suspension upgrades to it. Adjusters for the coil over front shocks and a heaver sway bar. Ride Safe. :beerchug:

Lanceskene 03-16-2016 11:17 PM

That Maxim was givin me nightmares for a couple days, instead of a normal 'Choke' Yamaha decided to use Mikuni carbs with a "Fuel Enrichment Circuit" that supplies fuel at startup until the engine warms up, was a bit of a learning curve for this old dog but after having the carbs off 'Twice' if finally did get it starting properly so hopefully I can get it sold now.

2007 Road King

Here is my 2007 Harley Road King. I've had it since 2008, a bit of mods to it but not too much. Two-tone color....black and chrome! Lots of chrome accessories, it's like a chrome grenade went off beside it. Without a doubt, there are 30 lbs of extra chrome bits and pieces on it, bolt-on and chromed engine/lower-end parts,

Power Vision with map
Fuel Moto Heavy Breather
SuperTrapp Stouts
Beach Bars
PIAA driving lights

You guys think Hytran is expensive! I run Redline in all three holes, synthetic engine oil, synthetic gear oil (Shockproof) and synthetic primary oil. Keeps the 1930's tranny technology quiet which is a feat in of itself.

Have bought a full set of rear Ohlin shocks for rear and Ohlin cartridges for front fork to replace the '40s suspension technology, hopefully making this couch a better performer when I need it. That is this spring's project, $2900 worth of Ohlin stuff.

Here is a pic from maybe 3-4 years back, before the Supertrapps. The Supertrapps put a nice rumble to it, since they've burned in they sound great.

Yep Harley thinks suspension means hanging a new trinket on the bike. I had Penske shocks and AK-20 cartridge kit in my Night Rod. Made a world of difference in the handling. You'll be glad you did the upgrade. Sweet looking ride Buddy. :beerchug:

Been looking for about a month now for something to ride. Been over 15 years since I've had a bike. Now that I'm not self employed, I actually might have time to ride. That, and I can ride to work. :biggrin2:

Found a 1984 Honda Shadow, VT700C. I'm so happy with my find! Bike has right at 5400 miles on it (no, that isn't a typo), and it popped up literally like 5 miles away. Been sitting for 8 years in a shed. Didn't run when I picked it up, 2 hours after arriving home, it did. :biggrin2: Got quite a bit of work to do to it before it's ready to ride. Rebuild the carbs, new tires (near as we can tell, they're original), new brakes (they want to stick), change all the fluids.... and maybe some upgrades (not before putting it on the road). :biggrin2: I don't usually give prices for what I paid, but I will on this deal. $700. :beerchug: SUPER happy with this deal!

Real quick: sorry to all of you guys who have sent me email's and PM this weekend... been busy with this and working on my truck. I'll get back to you all soon.
