Thanks Sam, I agree.:beerchug: and it's all done and seems to be ok, I hope.

Hey guys, I'm having the EXACT same problem! Oil smells like gas and the top of the carb/bottom of the air filter is covered in oil. I priced a fuel pump at $80 at my local cub dealer... Runs bad and hard to start also... New fuel pump or bypass and what else?

Sam Mac 12-23-2014 12:44 PM

I'd bypass the pump to test that it is in fact the pump and not the carb. Drain the oil refill and replace the oil filter.

Just Googled the Kohler part number for the pump (52-559-03-S) they are priced all over the place looks like from $35.00 and up.

Sam, when I do get it running, a very small amount of oil will come up through the small tube that is under the air filter... Breather tube?

I think you will get that if the oil level is too high, which, if you got gas leaking into the oil, it's going to be higher than normal because of the gas.

Yes, that is the breather tube. When the oil gets thin with fuel it will puke more oil. Get the problem fixed first, then see how it acts. It's normal for a small amount of oil to come into the housing from the tube, but minimal.

Thank you all for your prompt replies! Thanks Johnathon, I really appreciate your reply... BTW, I really enjoy some of your replies to the knowledge challenged!!

What ever you do, don't continue to run it with gas diluted oil or it will go bang and you'll join the see through block club. :beerchug:

Yeah, the 2072 was taking a break from lawn mowing duties and the other day I wanted to get her out to stretch her legs... She really didn't want to! :BB&YS: She's in the shop now with the hood up and ready to get a fuel pump bypass. Just have to let my back rest a day or two :bash2: so I can make the diagnosis! :biggrin2: :beerchug:
