Looked over the whole engine and tried to envision myself both taking it out and putting a rebuilt one in all by my lonesome...not sure I quite fit into that picture or not yet.

It's not hard.. basic mechanical.. go for it.. that's how I learned at about 8 years old.. my dad gave me a Cub Cadet and some wrenches and turned me loose! We are here to help with questions!:beerchug:

Can't be scared. If you deal with these old tractors long enough, eventually you'll have to do some amount of wrenching. Heck, if you got two good hands, you can do it.
I've only got one good one, and two useless legs, and sit down. If I can do repairs, I'm thinking you can handle it.:beerchug:

Rim Guard is approximately 2.5 lbs heavier per gallon than plain water.

Dusted off the 986

I needed to cut some waay overdue grass at the shop today.. The old yellow 982(986) has been sitting in the corner neglected for about a year... so I dusted off the seat.. helped her just a bit with a booster box and away she went! Took a minute and slipped the deck back under and mowed an hour or so without missing a beat!:beerchug:

I forget how much smoother and more powerful these old Onans are than the Kohlers till I run one just a minute.. The old Onan has a different tone to it.. and no matter how hard you choke it up you won't bring it to it's knees... It just keeps on digging for more!:biggrin2::biggrin2: It does have a fondness for gasoline though!!:biggrin2::biggrin2: Small price to pay for all the smooth torque!:beerchug:

Thanks Allen.. I had just agreed to buy this tractor a few weeks before your Red 982 came up for sale... I was kicking myself.. even thought about backing out and buying yours but didn't.. this one turned out to be a really nice well kept original tractor.. But I still really want a Red 982!

Thanks Todd! This has turned out to be one of the tightest most original tractors I have ever owned.. haven't done much to it other than an oil change and one battery.. the guy even sharpened the blades before he sent the tractor to me!!:beerchug:

Had some heavy rains this week. Used the 125 and an old trailer to pick up all the gravel out of my yard before I mow.

Nice 125!
