So I've been thinking about this for a while. What would make a flywheel not set up to connect a drive shaft? Well, today it dawned on me. It's not the flywheel. It's the end of the crankshaft. At least on the K series that I'm familiar with, the crank has an male threaded stub and the drive hub is actually bolted to the crank.

Where as the crank shafts in the engines like those pictured in post #4, similar to my Gravely walk behinds, has no male stub on the crank. Therefor any attempt to attach a drive hub to just the flywheel may be met with some less than desirable results.
