Any idea's on why it would start misfiring once it got up to temp?

Thanks for the help!

Head gasket...? carb gasket? tight?

Thank you for all the input and help!

Carb wasn't fully tighted down got it tight now. Head tight didn't have to tighten any bolts.

Ok went out and took some pictures so you can see what I found. Need to do some cleaning up! You can see where the points was mounted at in the one picture. As you can see I have some leakage guess I need to get some new gaskets and that should fix that problem.

I don't have a timing light I only have the one cub so not sure how much use I would get out of one for the cost but if it fixes my problem I guess it's worth it. Anyone know any of budget timing lights that work well?

Once again thank you for the help!

Just to let you all know I am watching this thread with great interest. My
K241AQS on my 1000 will usually start to run poorly when fully warmed up and when I put a load on it. I have done all the following:

Removed head, cleaned all the internals that I could, replaced with new gasket, torqued to spec.
New points and plug gapped to spec. (and re-checked numerous times)
New condensor
Replaced breather assembly
Rebuilt carb, new gaskets etc. adjusted to best of my ability.
Removed and cleaned gas tank and fuel shut off.

She still seems to run like it is fuel starved when I hit heavy grass, once she starts to fumble I flip off the PTO and it runs well for awhile. Can't get it figured out.

Cleaned up the area replaced gaskets with no improvement in how it runs. I talked to my buddy and he has a timing light so this weekend we going to see exactly where it's timed at. Will post updates when I get them.

Thanks for the help!

Well two friends two timing lights and two no shows so started pricing out timing lights anything I should be looking for or are they all the same?

You should be able to find a Sunpro inductive light for about $20-25. Check NAPA or Sears.

Well finally got out work on the cub today. (between 12 hr shifts and getting the old house ready for the renters I've had no time for the cub  )Pulled the engine to paint the timing mark. Needs a new clutch and had to get to the the bolts off for the shroud so I could paint the timing mark. Ordered a new head gasket and head bolts a couple of weeks ago just need the time to put them in.

Pulled the head and found this.

Attachment 3509

Is the wet spots where it's leaking around the head gasket? I haven't had the time or chance to try and fire this in a couple of weeks.

Attachment 3510

I will check for flatness once the carbon is cleaned off.

Attachment 3511

Shouldn't the intake from the carb be cleaner then this??

I also found a couple of bad spots in the wiring harness bare wires so that can't be helping anything. I ordered a new wiring harness for when I did my resto but looks like it's going in to service before then.

Still need order clutch parts the pin is being a pain to get out and my brother in-law barrowed my PB Blaster! :bash2: Without asking! :bash2:

I'm going to rebuild the carb using Matt's walk thru! Thanks Matt! I have the rebuild kit but haven't ordered new needles yet want to see how they look before I spend the money on them.

I did pick up a timing light so once I get a day off I'll get back to working on it.

Thanks for all the help!

Yep, that's a textbook example of a blown head gasket. The intake from the carb should be much cleaner than that, but you said the carb was loose, so that probably explains the dirt.

As long as the pointy ends of the carb needles aren't damaged, they'll be fine. They'll clean up in that bucket of carb cleaner. A new main needle is about $25, so it isn't something you want to replace unless you have to.

Thanks Matt makes me thing that I'm heading down the right road to getting it back running. Should I try and clean that intake port? I'll keep a eye on the main needle when I take it apart.

Thanks for the help!

Yeah, I'd try to get the dirt out of there. You don't need that getting into the engine and causing premature wear.
