Great looking job so far Sam. Looking forward to more pics and updates.

A little video of how they built them at the factory.

Figure if I do it the same way I can get the runs in the paint to look like factory. LOL

Did a little more today. Primed and painted the parts that I can't get to once it's assembled. Installed the clutch, front axle, steering box and rockshaft. Then I decided to prime and paint the frame. I'm happy with the results for a rattle can job.

bolivier 08-02-2014 06:07 PM

What color duplicolor are you using?

Yes, what are you using Sam? I bought some Cub Cadet brand paint and was very disappointed with it. How many cans are you burning threw to get this far? It's always up in the air for me on whether to go gun or rattle can. If I worked on more cubs and had more space then it would be more clear for me to go gun but I'm just not there yet and the convenience of just shaking and shooting some color is kind of nice :)

Lookin good Sam! :beerchug: And you said you'd never have an O. Lookin forward to progress. Good luck.

Dupli-Color School bus yellow part number DA1663. List price is $5.79, I paid under $4.00 per can at O'Reilly's (guy that runs the store takes good care of me) so far I've used about 1 and 1/2 cans of primer and 2 and 1/2 cans of yellow. So far I like the Dupli-Color better than any of the other stuff I've used. Wish they made it for the newer Cubs. (edit this is not an exact match for the color used on the O's, it's close but not exact. But Cub wanted over $14.00 a can for what they sell and I have never been impressed with Cub rattle can paint)

Welded the broken fender support, wet sanded the fenders and primered them.
Now I'm going to sit back and watch the Cup kids wreck at Pocono. :biggrin2:

Sam Mac 08-06-2014 05:13 PM

Fenders are painted and back on the tractor. Stripped the hood today, what a PITA should have just sand blasted it with the pressure washer sandblaster. Wet sanded the wheels and have them ready to prime and paint. Broke all the beads on the tires so they should be easy to paint. Sorry no pics today. :beerchug:

Looked like Daytona. My all time favorite track this weekend. I probably have over 5000 miles on WGI.

Got the hood and fronts wheels painted yesterday. Used some Valspar IH white that I bought at TSC before they switched to the Majic crap. I have enough for the rear wheels but not sure I have enough for the seat and grill. Probably will need to find a place to order a couple more cans. I had the wheels set up so that I could spin them as I painted. Worked out slick and no runs. :beerchug:

Have you ever noticed how some people can just see a simple solution and deploy it????
These people usually make me sick and then I appreciate that they share their ideas with pictures.:biggrin2::biggrin2:
That cardboard paint stopper is an excellent idea and seemed to work well. I've used paper towels and tape before so I could get the thin paper down as much as possible between the rim and tire but I think the cardboard is adequate and much easier to work with. Thanks for the picture Sam.

Do you let the air out of the tire so you can position the cardboard easier?

I agree. Great tips here Sam! I'm also wondering how much air did you have to let out? I would like the exact PSI level of each tire please :bash2: HAHAHA just kidding but would like to know if that was the case. Those beads get pretty tight. I'm also pleased to see how well this is coming out with just rattle cans! When you find a place that sells the paint you are using could you please offer up a link. I would like to purchase some white and yellow for my 73 since that is going to get an overhaul this winter.

bolivier 08-08-2014 10:17 AM

He broke the bead on the tires so the cardboard is between the tire and rim.

Well I guess that's easier then taking the tires off. Thank you for the info!

Took the valve cores out of the tires and broke the beads so it's easy to push the tire in to get the card board behind the flange of the rim. After the paint dries just slip the cardboard out and air the tire back up. These all had tubes so it's simple. Did the rears today and got them back on the tractor. Pulled the controls out of the dash tower so I can get started on it next. At least now I can roll it around. I'll try to get some pics later.

garnold 08-08-2014 01:52 PM

Excellent stuff man! Really fun watching this come together :biggrin2:

Some pics from today. Got lucky with the dash tower, the rust from the leaking battery's over the years is only surface. Once done it will get a sealed battery.

Looks good Sam

Thanks for the complements guys. I'm not going for the totally restored show quality look. Just want it to look decent and to help preserve it. I'll keep you updated as things progress. :beerchug:

Sam Mac 08-10-2014 10:17 AM

new decals come in yesterday so the dash tower will be getting some serious attention this week. Then it will be the tins for the engine.

Dash tower is done and back on the tractor along with a new wiring harness and dash decal. Rolled it out side for a couple pics. Got the tins off the engine and started cleaning it up.

Well it runs. Still need to do the grill and the seat. Seat has a crack, going to weld it then see if I can find a nice seat cover for it. Carb must have gotten some crud in the inlet while I had things apart because it's over flowing. Of course it leaked on the new paint. Think I got lucky because as soon as it started to leak I got it shut off and blew the gas off with the blow gun. I don't see any damage. :beerchug:

J-Mech 08-17-2014 05:39 PM

Looking good Sam!

Hey, in the last pic I can barely see the drawbar. Has that thing ever pulled anything in it's life? That thing looks perfect! All of my cubs look like they've pulled a disk their whole life. Drawbar hole wallered out to almost 3/4" on most of them!! Stinking people using too small of hitch pins and letting them beat around. (I'm guilty too......:biggrin2:)

Jon

This one had an easy life. Now all it will do is look cute. It may have had an engine replacement because the paint didn't match but other than that I looks to be original. Neat little tractor.
