You know your situation better than anyone, including what the intended use for this machine is.

I still would get it.

Does the owner seem to know what all is wrong with it?

Thanks again guys.. so the list of missing parts is now: seat, starter/gen, points, air filter assembly, and coil.

Hoping that's all. Gens on ebay for around $50, air filter assembly maybe $30 tops, points IDK yet. then cleaning and paint and elbow grease. the guy is going to send me more, closer up pics tomorrow.

** the coil looks very similar to automotive coils from the 80's

Oh and is teh starter and generator a combined unit?

Nah like I said he got it to restore but did not even get started on it before he started work on a CC 582.

Oh and at this point, I'd get it to restore and flip. My grand plan is to work up to being able to buy a low boy.

IMO I'd get it too.

I'm confident, to a point. I do not have the tools for valve or piston work, and pulling the crank would scare me a little. Everything else though I'm comfortable with, even if I've never touched a K-161.

Even if the engine smokes, knocks or is locked up, that's a pretty good price, even I would buy it for that.

Try to get a S/G with it.

What's an S/G?

Yosemite Sam 05-11-2015 09:55 PM

Starter generator and yes it is one thing.

Ok cool, yeah this one has none. I did see a number on ebay for around the $50 mark. I'll have to get one ordered soon.

An S/G is a starter/generator.

I have about 10 times in my 73 than what you are paying and I still do not have any regrets. I paid $125 for mine, and put a lot of extras on it. The 73 is a fun, great sized little powerhouse. Last of the economy line from IH. If you are buying it to flip, then you will not make any money, but if you are buying it to add to your collection, then you will not regret it.

It is also missing the clutch cover, too.
