There is no way of telling if the rods are bad. most of the time, the rods just break out of the blue. No warning signs. They've actually been nicknamed "Blownans". There is also no way of telling if the rods have been changed without tearing into the engine. I think all the "B" series engines have the weak style rods and the newer "Performer" series have the new style, but I'm just making wild assumptions on that. Here's a pic of the weak style rods. the new ones don't have the hole.

Well that helps alot! At least if you end up tearing down the engine, if your rod have the holes in them, for sure you have the olds weak ones! Great help, thank you!!

Put your engine through an X-Ray machine. :biggrin2.gif:

I was looking for a engine manual and a source for parts but I'm not having any luck. Where did you get your parts AJ and do you have a manual?

Oak, I looked up the Onan part number at partstree and then did a e-bay search for them and found everything I needed for my 982. I also found my manual for it there, but the manual I got is almost worthless. Every other page has a page printed on top of it. Basically 2 pages of text on one page. Really made me mad but I did get a full refund on it.

So can you tell what series of engine you have aj just by looking at the serial numbers? Can you contact Cummins to confirm if it would have the new or old style rods in or is that a crap shoot? I was fortunate to get a copy of the service manual for the engine with the tractor when it arrived today - need to look through it to see how helpful it is. Looks good from what I have seen quickly so far. Honestly though, been oogling at the tractor more than anything!

Manual is pretty decent, it covers multiple engines and applications all in the same book. You have to read the headings to make sure your looking at the 982 engine in each section. I like it so far considering it came with the tractor price. And honestly I have so many things bouncing around in my head I honestly forget if they give part numbers in it or not - I don't think so though. I am pretty sure it would only be classed as an owners manual, not a parts manual as well.
