No, the points should be just starting to open when the "S" mark is in the sight hole, 20 degrees before TDC.

Matt,
I did have the S mark in the sight hole just as the OHM meter indicated that they broke. is it possible to set them incorrectly when the piston is at the top on exhaust stroke? Maybe not?
I believe I have the points dialed in and learned a lot. Thanks
Regards,
Chris

Piston @ TDC and exhaust open, points open? Would that be the compression release working?

Sugarmaker 10-26-2011 10:13 PM

CHWNY,
Yes compression release does kick in there some time too. I was just not sure if I could time this wrong by having the piston up on the exhaust stroke. Matt is shaking his head going you dummy of course that's not possible because of how the engine is designed. Or some good logical answer like that:)
Anyone on the carb gasket question?
Regards,
Chris

On the gasket question I know on most 2stroke engines the carb has a spacer with two gaskets. I would use a gasket on both sides just to insure against leaks. I see that you smoothed out the mating surfaces but since the plastic is rigid any imperfection could cause a vacuum leak. That gasket is very basic and could be made no problem. Why take a chance after doing ALL your good work? Your guess is as good as anyones as to why its not in the gasket set. You could time the engine at top dead center but it would be retarded (NO not the act the timing)Clay

Chris, I just finished reading through this whole thread and I'm at a loss for words on your restore. Great break down on the resto.

Ok you guys have been a lot of help you get rewarded (I thinki ts a reward) with some update shots. Guys I know these are not the clearest from my cell but I can upload them about 10 x faster. Plus they make the tractor look way better too!

Last night Decals were placed on tractor dry. I just could not bring my self to get it the tub with all those decals! I like them and would recommend Maple Hunter. I did get the 14 HP for the tank. And a set of decals for the 42 inch deck. They will be called on again if another restoration comes about. Lesson learned: clean all the small bumps from under the decal area!

Added rubber pads at three points under the hood. Two at the cowl and one in the front center. Adjusted the dash and the hood for fit. Had to tip the grill forward one washer thickness to allow some room where the hood and cowl meet. Adjusted the hood hold down clamps upward and then tweaked the hood catch brackets down to give a nice gentle but firm lock. Installed stainless bolts at the hood hinge hole with lock nuts.

In the mail today arrived a custom built spacer for the throttle rod. That unit was disassembled, components cleaned, and installed the new bushing. I reused the brass screws and modified the threads on the ends of the screws holding the butterfly plate. Nice tight fit on the shaft. Well worth the days wait. Thanks to Scott D in Sagertown! Thanks to Matt I did install the choke cable to the carb prior to mounting it.

Clay,
Guess what I found; another new gasket in a old gasket kit I had from the 127. So the 147 carb has a gasket on both sides.

-IH Amp meter installed. All wiring buttoned up.
-Battery installed.
-Tried the lights! ( drum roll please!)
-We have a pulse!!!!!
-Jumped the voltage regulator term BAT to GEN to polarize the gen. And stopped for the night.

Next custom exhaust design and build (MAYBE)?, Mount Gas tank, Install elec lift. Getting closer! Running out of stuff to do! HELP! Up to late got to go!!!
Regards,
Chris
