Default Is this shot??

First time ive torn into a ross steering gear and i have a couple questions..when i tore it apart chunks of metal fell out and all the balls were loose and all over the place..
1st, are these holes supposed to be there? The mounting holes go all the way into the case..also, the bearings wore a groove into the case..i assume because its not even depth wise all the way around..so is this box toast?? Im going to a boneyard tomorrow to see what i can come up with, but in your opinions where is the best place to find replacement steering parts?? I have more ??s Too but for now....thanks alot...

From that picture I really can't tell. Remember that it is a S L O W speed gear box not attached to anything powered. I would try putting it back together with new grease and see how it feels. As long as it doesn't bind or have too much slop you should be fine.

Are the bearing races or cups as they are sometimes called all still there? I've seen them crack and allow the balls to run against the aluminum housing. Yes, the bolt holes go all the way through. This is normal. I would see about getting the new bearing cups and if the balls are at all pitted I would get new balls too. I've seen the end plug break as well and not support the bearing cup as it should. This makes the breakage problem worse as there is not proper support for the cup. There is an update for the end plug that includes a new plug, an updated cup design and a slightly cupped washer that fits between the plug and the cup (or race). It's hard to tell with pics, but I'm guessing that the main housing is fine. Just be sure the grease hole is open from the zerk past the pitman shaft into the screw case. A new follower (tapered bolt) is probably in order as well.

Thanks gentleman, yes the races were almost disintegrated...and the plug is bad also...someone did put a nice remote grease link on it to the frame rail, but apparently didnt use it!!!! Heres some more pics, i suppose it is hard to see, but that groove is towards the top of the housing running right where that hole is..

Default ross steering gear box

Rebuilt the box and did the "Nice 605" bearing upgrade on our 105 2 yrs ago. Went well, but I was not able to get the lever plate flat or perpendicular to the pivot bolt welded to it. ANY tips on how to do this ?

Every steering box I have rebuilt I find the side plate warped. I use a press to get the side plate flat and the welded bolt exactly at a ninety degree angle to the flat plate. Once you get this accomplished the final adjustment is even from one side of the steering wheel turn to the other side.

Use a square edge to insure it is correct.

I say update your plug and lower bearing race to the newer style because they are less prone to cause trouble. It looks to me like a new bearing cup in the top would be fine as long as it seats into the housing well. Looks like one of your bearing ball spacers is missing and should be definitely included Your cam follower bolt is shot and needs to be replaced. There is also a foam gasket that goes between the housing and the little wear plate that should be replaced as well. Other than that, follow above advice from everyone and you should be good to go. I think you can do it!!

thanks.....Yeah, thats one of the worst cam followers ive seen in pictures on here, picked up a new axle last night (someone broke mine, welded it) and some other little finds...heres a pic of the brakes i just finiShed...frame back from sand blaster tonight, rearend and hydo are all ready for paint, gonna do small trunnion work first..really could use new suction tube also, but anyhow, motor is almost done, wont take me long, and everything else is done, down to every bolt, roll pin...wont want to use it...lots of stainless

Nice! can't wait to see more progress pics. As others have said, the steering looks rebuildable, I've seen similar and BTDT.

I appreciate it SDD, and i will get some shots once its closer to together..

Anyone know the best place to get a similar replacement seat?? Cheapest, maybe 11" high or so, (thats my original one is)??? Thankyou..
