Cat 0 / IH tiller adapter
I decided to start reverse-engineering the Cat-0 tiller adapter for the IH tillers. Here's what I've got so far...just need to finish weld and paint these. I'm running out of spring break, so I'll need to attach the tiller to the gearbox next time, and come up with a way to lift it with the Cat-0 lift. I really like how the gearbox goes on and off in 30 seconds with this.

I'm now mostly finished with this project I started when I was home for spring break. This is a seemingly rare IH tiller adapter to allow the IH tillers to be used on the 82 series tractors with Cat-0 hitches. I worked off of one small picture of the actual kit. I now need to get a belt and set up a mule drive and I'll be tilling with the diesel.
Does anybody have any documentation about the actual kit? I have never seen anything anywhere other than one picture and caption in Hank Will's book. I saw one in person many years ago, before I knew what it was. |

MATT,
I really like your setup. But there are 2 areas that concern me. First of all don't take this the wrong way. I am in no way knocking your work. I have learned to build and brace for the unexpected. I would try to get a bolt or two into the bar that goes into the top link connect. I would go from the gear box side and just tap into the bar you made. This would help keep the gear box mount from trying to pull away from your made bracket, as your bolts are down low. Then I would make a pair of supports from the side of the gear box mount running rite to the pins for the lower 3 point arms. This would definitely help with any unexpected side load or twist, from hitting rocks, roots, or whatever. It also would not hurt to put 2 more square blocks towards the middle of your (hinge) on your made bracket, clearance allowing that is. Again don't take these suggestions the wrong way. I tend to over build things, but they don't break. JOE

jbollis-
The gearbox mount I made is stronger than the OEM one was...I think it only had 3 bolts holding the box to the bracket. Mine has 4 bolts and a larger plate. I can't easily tie into the pins for the lower arms. My 3-point plate is tweaked a bit, and one of the pins is no longer orthogonal to the plate. I don't want to know how the PO bent that. The rest of that hinge is pretty rigid. I'm not sure adding another hook is going to do anything. The two plates butt against each other when it is assembled. I'll see how it holds up, I guess. This is basically just as the OEM version of this kit was, with a slightly larger gearbox mount. Thanks for the input though |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
