The 149 Runs
Took a power washer to the 149. She looks worse than she really is. Not much missing. A few visual issues.
Once I had her cleaned up I decided to see if I could get her to run. Changed fluids - set the points - robbed the carb off the 127 - fixed a few wires - cleaned and gaped the plug - took the head off which I'm sure had never been done... The story about this 149 is that she had been sitting where I found her since 1980. There was a carb problem the old owner couldn't overcome so she was abandoned. When I took the head off and looked at that cylinder wall - no ridge - no carbon (none) - it was evident I was looking at a low hour 14 horse motor. It took a little chemtool to get the exhaust valve unstuck but once I put it back together she cranked over and fired up. The 149 runs.

I'm debating on tearing mine all down, or simply doing a 'mechanical restoration', and enjoying said patina. The paint is in much better shape than yours (what happened to it?) but my tin has a few dings and such.
A tractor with no paint, like yours, I'd tear down and rebuild, and by sounds of it, you've done your research. The experience with older cars (cool!) will come in handy. Many of the same procedures and such, just fewer parts and a little smaller scale.

Teardown
Made some progress on the 149 - 498944 restoration. Completed the teardown this week as well as alot of sandblasting. Identified a few issues with some of the parts as they were coming off and being cleaned. The biggest issue is the battery box pan on the tins...its gone. Neglected acid spills are not a good thing. Fuel tank has a hole in it. Tires are shot. Looks like a few creative fixes had been incorporated over the years. But all in all not to bad.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
