Default 149 & 127 Rescue

I'll admit, I have a soft spot for well-built old-things that have been abused and forgotten. It's what drove me to restore a 1955 Chevy coupe (barn find) and a 1955 chevy 1/2 ton pickup. But that was years ago.

Over the last year, a good friend of mine began telling me about these little yellow and white garden tractors called IH Cub Cadets and the IH Cub Cadet story. He thought I should restoration one. Become a proud parent sort of speak. I became intrigue, maybe even a bit fascinated.

The internet's a wonderful tool (it didn't exist when I did my auto restorations) so i did some research. Alot of reading. And eventually found my way here. What an awesome site. After reading many of your stories I was hooked - had to have one, had to restore one.

A smart guy might seek out a restoration project candidate based on condition or rareness. Not me. Remember that soft spot? I was looking for abused and forgotten. Well, I found it - actually I found them. A 127 and a 149. Along with the tractors came a front blade, 48" mower deck, two 1A tillers, a plow, a scraper blade and other assorted parts which I'm certain fell off the tractors during there career with this owner.

So, as it may be, IH Cub Cadet Model 149, S/N 498944 has been rescued along with IH Cub Cadet Model 127, S/N ?????? (Haven't removed the gear drive for the tiller yet to get to the S/N tag).

I think I'm gonna need help!

Your 149 doesn't look too bad, a little tlc and it will be as good as new. I too am restoring a 149, mine may have looked better to start out with, but I doubt yours is in any worse condition mechanically! Good luck and congratulations on becoming a proud parent!

Great intro! THe tins on the 149 look in pretty good shape. The weather hasn't been kind to the paint. You got some great attachments as well! I look forward to seeing your progress with your restores!

Welcome to OCC and congrats on your new kids. As you have probably read here, the 149 is quite a highly sought after Cub. I can't wait to see your progress with both of them and the attachments.

Default Just Amazing!

I couldn't resist.

The 127 was part of what I called the rescue. She had been sitting idle for quit some time I was told. The 149 - well, it was missing the carb. But the 127 - she looked intact. I had the ignition key? What was stopping me from trying? I had to know.

Ok, so the battery was dead and needed of water. A little water and on the charger it went!

No fuel in the tank - so I gave it a little - it all ran on the ground. Installed a new fuel bowl. no more leaks.

Checked the oil - looked clean - was full. So what's stopping me now?

A million thoughts and what-ifs ran through my head. But I couldn't resist.

So, just how tough are you little tractors anyway? I turned the ignition key.

Just amazing! It runs!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
