Qa42A on a 125
Decided it was time to get ready for winter so I started mounting the Qa42a that I bought this summer to the 125. Ran into a few issues and need to confirm a few things.
1. What belt is needed? Is it a IH-55053-C1 (15/32 X 30). The parts sites do not list a belt for a 125 using a Qa42a. I checked the operators manual, but nothing there. Searched the site, but nothing for a narrow frame. I have a 15/32 belt that I mounted it with, but it is too long (about 32") and does not tighten enough. After fully adjusting the tension using the adjuster on the mount, it is snug, but not tight. 2. What size pulley should be on the gearbox? The pulley that came with it measured 4 1/2" across the face. Again, the parts sites I tried do not list the pulley for a Qa-42a on a narrow frame. The pulley I have on it now is about 4 1/4" with a 3/8 groove (off of an qa-42). Should I use a 3/8 belt? The snowthrower was previously mounted to a wideframe, so I knew I had to adjust the mounts, which was no problem. Got that done and it fits fine. However, the way it is mounted, the belt is rubbing on the tractor grille casting, even after the belt is snug. IMG_1603 (1).jpg IMG_1605 (1).jpg Do I need a smaller pulley? There is no way to move either the mount or gearbox over, so the only thing left would be to change to a smaller pulley, or notch the area where it is rubbing. Or will the proper belt, fully tensioned allow it to sit in the pulley better and clear the casting, with the current pulley? Thanks.

Cub Cadet does list both on their website. Items 4 & 6 in the diagram.
http://www.cubcadet.com/equipment/AR...0-A/0128200001 Edit: Always use cubcadet.com with looking for parts. If it's not available from them, you can usually get the part number from there and do your own searching. |

Thanks. I did see that on cubcadet.com, Partstree and a few other sites, but it says for "For Cadet Tractors 700 thru 1650" or "For Cadet Tractors 482 thru 782", which are all newer than the 125 and not narrow frames. Or is that a misprint on them all and it should say "70 thru 1650"?
None of them really list any measurements, so I am hoping someone that has the same setup can confirm.

I think the gearbox has a little bit of side to side movement if you loosen the mounting bolts. Not much, but could be enough to get it off your frame. |

Perfect. Looks like I have the correct pulley then. I will try to adjust the gearbox location on the mounting plate. Hopefully that is enough.
Need to get this done so I can move on to the rest of the list. I like playing with the cubs, but need to move on. Maybe I can use the 125 to help with some of the other chores.

They are fun to play with The 125 handles the thrower really well. Only thing that would make it better would be a hydro lift.

A hydro lift would be nice with a blower... oh wait, there is one... ,
IMG_1608.jpg Found a little more room for the gearbox belt. The gearbox didn't have any room to move to the right on the mount, but did get the grille casting to move to the left a bit. Belt still touches the casting and rubs, but just the edge. Once I get the proper belt, I think it will be fine since the belt seems to be sitting pretty high in the gearbox pulley.

Very nice! I'm slightly jealous. I have a lift but it needs a rebuild before I can mount it to a tractor.
I agree the proper belt should get that last bit of clearance you seek. Glad you got it figured out! |

Thanks for the help and the comments. It has come along way from where it started. It was just a roller, and took parts from two other lost cause tractors to put it together again.
This hydro-unit was just rebuilt, but the valve leaks a few drops. Must have nicked the o-ring when I was putting it back together. I really don't want to tear into it again, so may just put up with it until next year and watch the fluid level. I found out that some of the Bolens hydro units use the same seals in the hydro pump and the cylinder, so if you are stuck for parts, there are Bolens sources as well. Some Gilson, Wards, Power King and Century Fox parts work too.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
