Yes, the pump does go above the cast boss. It looks like I have it rotated 180 from how you have yours. Just measured and the pump housing is 3 5/8 long. I think mine is a .35cu version but probably the same casting.

Rob_M, it looks like your pump is oriented with the drain port up. In this configuration, which side of the pump is suction? Based on what I'm reading, it should be the right side, standing behind the tractor. Is that correct? (being driven CCW).

With attribution to Rob_M, third time's the charm. I've copied Rob_M's design and remounted my pump. I have to say, it's a great idea. I, too, tapped the holes in the plate for the two bottom screws on the pump flange and cut the bolts off. The two horizontal "arms" are 1-1/4 x 1/8 angle, a bit hard to tell from the photos as they look like flat bar. And thanks to Jon for advice to try to improve my mounting method.

I've got alignment very close again, so next step is to machine the extension for the hydro's rear shaft and install the lovejoy coupling. The pillow blocks arrive tomorrow, so I'll look at them and see if I want to try to mount one to the cover of the gearbox. The hydro rear output shaft is pretty short, and I wonder if any extension will wobble if not supported.

Pics from today's session. Only had a couple hours, but got it mostly done.

Nicely done. Keep up the good work.

I know you said that the starter was able to spin over the dual hydrostats but I wonder how it will do with the addition of the pump.

Mine doesn't have any visible wobble without a support bearing.

Looks great! Kind of like that pump was built to be located there.

Rob, is your lovejoy coupling attached to the shafts with set screws, or keyed? Or is it the split type that tightens around the entire shaft? Just wondering what you did to keep it from slipping on the shaft under torque.

It is just held with set screws. I tightened them up enough to create a mark on the shaft and then removed them and ground a flat spot on the shaft where the marks were.

Once the tractor is warmed up no amount of load has really bogged down the motor so I don't believe there is much torque to deal with. Basically you will probably be using only about 20% (wild guess,LOL) of the pressure that these pumps are capable of producing.

Frank, that looks great! Glad Rob joined in. You did a nice job on your mount also Rob!

Frank, it looks like you got everything really in line. I would almost be temped to forgo the lovejoy and just use the alignment shaft you made. (It will obviously need to be longer.) Can't come out if it's pinned on one end, and long enough to cover both shafts. If you think it's aligned enough not to cause issue, you don't need the lovejoy. The driveshaft already has "cushion" in it with the rag joints.

Frank will need to check this on his but I seem to remember the pump has to be put in place by dropping it straight down. The cast boss on the trans-axle is in the way to slide it straight in from the back. This doesn't give much for the sleeve to cover the shafts. With mine I slid the front half of the lovejoy onto the short shaft, put the pump in place and then slid the lovejoy back into place.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
