Default More on Idler assembly

I finally got my 38a deck back on my 800, after removing blades & spindles over the winter.

At some time, some ahhhhhhh "mechanic" had greased the spindles with some of that cheapy yellowish-orange grease that did not mix well with the IH 251 Lithium grease. Took many hours to get the spindle bearings and spindle cup assemblies cleaned out.

Anyway, I test ran the mower, and it was still noisy...very noisy. I looked, and the flat bar on the deck belt idler assembly with the idler tension spring hooked to it has A LOT of vertical play....so much that when the deck is stopped, the idler pulley actually pushes the belt down on the discharge side spindle. Without the belt on, there is about 5/8" vertical slop.

Didn't notice that when I took the deck apart last winter, but I did wonder why the belt was frayed on the edges.

Has anyone run into this before, and know of any easy fix?
Thanks a bunch

Cubby Guy

How about some pics of the problem area, should be something easy to fix.

I’d start by looking for wear in the bore of #23 and on the OD of #27. Also make sure #27 is solid when it’s tightened to the deck shell.

Thanks a bunch, Sam.

Part #23 is the "sloppy" part, so it probably has some wear, along with that bolt

Follow up on the idler assembly "slop".

I took the idler bar apart, and there is some wear on both the arm and the bolt.

Having already used up my repair budget, I rummaged around in my "When the heck will I EVER use THIS?" box and found a piece of brass shim stock. I cut it to fit over the shoulder bolt and inside the idler arm similar to a very thin brass bearing, and greased it up a lot.

This is not a permanent fix, but should get me through this mowing season. Not sure, but I think the shim stock was 0.025.

Sounds like a good fix to me, it may last quite a while.

Thanks, guys. That fix also quieted the mower a lot.

Maybe this fix idea will help out someone else that needs a repair, but is short on ready cash.

I was looking at the bolt that goes down through the arm that the idler pulley is mounted to. Some of the later decks had a grease fitting in it. You could drill and tap it for a fitting. Just drill about 3/4" deep and then drill a hole in the side to allow the grease to exit through the side.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
