Default Rapid clicking noise in fuel pump ??

I just got a Cub Cadet 1641 (16 HP B&S) to bring back to life. When the key is turned to the "on" position there is a fast clicking sound that comes from the fuel pump. If you put you hand on the pump you can feel the nosie is coming from the pump. I just got the thing power washed last night and a kind gentleman on this site emailed me a wiring diagram, but I have not had an opportunity to do anything to it yet.

The guy I got it from said if you put fuel into the carb it would fire and run.

Any thoughts or ideas about the fuel pump noise??

The 1641 should have a vacuum operated fuel pump. Did someone replace it with an electric pump? How about a pic of the pump.

Default This is why we come here first...........

You are so right. Closer inspection shows that it did originally have a vaccum fuel pump...note in the picture the hose coming out of the valve cover. Also in a box of spare parts that came with the tractor was the vaccum pump.

Now for the questions: Can I use the electric fuel pump? Is there any advantage or disadvantage to one over the other. Should I go back to the vaccum pump? Will there be any problems with fuel pressure?

The wiring diagram shows a power wire coming from the starter to the "fuel selonoid." Is that an indicator that an electric fuel pump will work??

I saw on the vaccum pump there are arrows on two of the ports, what do the arrows indicate? Is it the direction of the fuel flow and the one without the arrow for the vaccum line.

I'd stick with the electric pump. The noise is normal, so now you know it's probably working.

I don't like those vacuum pumps...if you lug the engine really hard, they'll stop pumping and the engine tries to die.

I think the major problem was a gunked up fuel solenoid. I removed it, cleaned with carb cleaner, and it started up using the electric fuel pump.

I'm still debating over the electric vs. vacuum fuel pump.
