147 Timing Question
Hi all, can you guys give me a walk through on the timing/ points setting on a 147 . I looked all over that flywheel shroud for a hole to find the timing marks but I don't see it anywhere. were they different on a 147 ? I rolled the engine to what I think is TDC on the compression stroke with the plug out. The pin pushed the points out and I set the points with a .020 feeler. Coudn't get it to fire. WTH am I dong wrong ? Thanks Smoke

I found the hole guys, I was looking on the side of the shroud. That thing is really tucked in behind the starter/gen. I give it a try tomorrow and see if I can get it going. I don't have a timing light. Can I just rotate the flywheel to the S mark and set the points at that location ? Thanks |

If you don't have a test light, you can use a multimeter set on "continuity." That's how I do it. That way, you don't need the engine hooked up to a battery so it's useful during rebuild assembly.

Thanks Sawdust, I have both the test light and a multi meter. I think my father in law has a test light that I might borrow to dial it in good.

When I get the SP in the port hole, It seems that I have to rotate the crank or flywheel about 3" before the test light lights. I cant get the test light to light on the SP mark. The cam rod comes out farther, then it lights but by then I am past the SP mark. Could my flywheel be off ? When I use a feeler at .020, I can get it to fire but I am no where near the SP. Set the SP mark in the window, then using the test light, adjust the points to just break contact and light the light. You have to adjust them. Forget the feeler gauge.
