The whole NAPA sediment bowl filter number is 7023571, according to one of the documents here on OCC.

I spent some time this weekend diagnosing my charging problem. The S/G starts just fine, but it does not charge. Did the trouble shooting on it and it appears to be bad field coil(s). I'm sure this S/G must be original to the tractor, from the looks of it.

What are the general thoughts about replacement. Should I buy an aftermarket, or take it somewhere to get repaired. I'd rather take it somewhere for repair rather than doing it myself due to time and not sure what else I'll find in there.

If I buy an aftermarket, anybody have a good place they'd recommend?

Pretty sure the original S/G was yellow.
A good old fashioned automotive electric starter rebuilder should be able to rebuild it proper.
Our 125 went thru several S/G's before we added some sheet aluminum in between the S/G and engine to create a heat shield of sorts.

I prefer the glass sediment bowl over a filter. I can then see what crap and water is coming out of tank and clean it out.
For the same reason I do not use any goop on the air filter base as it is easier to take it off when the carb bowl needs cleaned out as well.

I would also use ethanol free gasoline in it.

Thanks Double07. I hadn't thought about the original being yellow, but you're probably right. I'm going to call a local auto electric show tomorrow and see what they want to rebuild.

And thanks for the comment on the glass bowl filter. I ended up replacing mine with a new one. It works good now --- no leaks. I also bought 5 gallons of ethanol free gasoline to go in it. Hopefully when I get the alternator fixed I can move on to the deck. Definitely got a noisey bearing somewhere in it.

To everyone that's replied to my posts --- I really appreciate it. There's no substitue for experience and when it comes to Cub Cadets, I'm a bit short. But I'm learning from all you guys!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
