It may have been Curtis with the loose spacer?

Wow! Well I must say you didn't let it stop you from getting in there.
As I mentioned to Curtis I was able to get the cases apart by cutting the outer race of the bearings, removing the balls, and then the case will come over the shaft. Now that I think Of it I may not have documented that very well. On my #1 it would have been junk without new bottom bearings installed. In hind site maybe mine should have been a parts tiller

LOL,,, the one thing I forgot to do is, take a measurement for how long to cut the pipe for the tines.

can anyone take a measurement from the center of the pin hole in the shaft to the end of the 3 tines.

Doug,
the dimension you ask for is 12 inches. The tube extends towards the case another 3.25 inches The total length of the tiller tube assembly is about 15.25 inches. The clearance inside the sheet metal is about 2 inches from the end of the tine to the sheet metal.

You're making great progress. Pictures are great! I like the notion of a grease fitting.

It was a thought. You can't design HP though. I thought if it would handle 6 sets it might handle 8 sets. Thanks.

Yes, It is I with the spacer problem and it's still not open. I did get one tine shaft off after a week of soaking. I shouldn't have to do the other but will depending on how this side goes just because it will be easier to cleanup and paint if it's off. I'll not replace the bearing if I don't have to. The bearings are next for me. I'm a bit slower but I'll get there.

I used a press to try to move the bearings. all that moved was the outer housing . it poped off over the bearings. so it apart now. and ordered 2 new bearings. spent the day cleaning all the old grease out and getting the rust off.

got a little more done today. I welded the one piece back together and used fiberglass filler on the rust pits. also got the other parts blasted.
Im going to take the bearing hangers to the chromer to get the Zinc but back on them. so they look like a new shinny washer.

Doug,
You've turned the corner on this project. I wasn't sure if you were going all the way with this tiller, but after seeing the work you have done over the last couple of days I know you will be very pleased with the results.

Your cases look great with the pits filled in and the welded halves. I like the idea of the zinc plated bearing retainers. Very nice touch.

Did you have to cut the inner race off the shaft? Looks like chains and sprockets are in good serviceable condition.

This thread will help other tiller owners understand these a lot better. Very good pictures too! Thanks for the update.
