ATTENTION: Lets talk

Guys,

I want to say something. I'm as guilty as anyone, and I'm trying to pay more attention and do better. We have a lot of new members, and I'm more apt to answer technical questions. But we still have a lot of guys who do some outstanding work on their machines. Restorations, "refreshes" and mods. Guys like zippy1, Oak, MikeMasheris, finsriskw, olds45512, mjsoldcub, Nightow1, Rescue11, DeltaCub, just to name a few. (I am NOT trying to leave anyone out. Those are the guys and lady, (who will be included when I say "guys" from here on out for simplicity) who came to mind quickly.) You guys do fantastic work. You all deserve a round of applause, and a pat on the back for jobs well done. I need to make sure and say that in a post when you do. So many of you guys I mentioned, I talk to regularly, and much of the time I know about projects, purchases, or builds before you post them, so I forget to say something. But all you newbies who are coming in.... don't just sit back and say nothing. So many of you only ask questions, and don't comment on the build threads. I've seen a few where only 2 or 3 people are commenting, yet the work is top notch!! We all need to do a better job of at least saying "good job" when a good job is done! To you guys who think like me.... I "walk away" from so many technical threads on here frustrated. Frustrated that people don't understand, or won't listen, or argue, or just plain don't "get" what to do, that I forget to say "Good job!" to the guys who really do awesome work.

So, to sum it up. Lets give each other at least recognition at a job well done. Newbies, YOU TOO! Don't be lurkers. You may not be able to answer questions, but you can surely say "Good job!" when you see one. I'll try and do better myself.

To you guys I mentioned, keep up the good work! To the people I forgot, you too! Again, I'll try and pay more attention to the restoration/refresh and custom build threads.

NOTE: To you guys who know me well, this isn't a promise to not get frustrated, or critique work. I'm just saying I'll try harder to say when I think a good job is done, LOL. Because sometimes I forget to.

No, I'm really tired, and I had a bad day.

But seriously.... I was noticing the other day that the "build" threads don't get the attention they deserve. I mean, we had a v-reg post go on and on and on..... many people chiming in. But then I was looking at a build thread. I read it, and didn't comment. I got to thinking about it later, and wished I had. Now, I can't remember who's it was. Just got me thinking... I really like the build threads, but usually they are long, and I struggle to keep up with them along with answering questions. I just forget to point out when people do good work.... mostly because I'm preoccupied with pointing out/trying to correct all the wrong ways people try to fix things. I just really wanted to call attention to the people who do it right, and can do it without asking a million questions.

I agree Jon, we all could do a little better at giving each other a virtual "pat on the back" when we read of their build. The guy that did a tune up and a carb rebuild should get as much respect as the guy doing the total restoration. Costs nothing and makes everyone feel good. Carry on!

I really do enjoy a good build thread, that was one of the main reasons I joined the madness back in 2010. Seemed to be more back in "the day".
I do agree with you Jon, giving credit where, and when credit is do.

I hear you. Loud and clear. There are threads... very minor hardly noteworthy threads that go on and on for days, but when people go outside the box, or do something pretty fascinating... crickets in the background.

A "my cub won't start" thread gets more views and empty comments than a build or customization thread.

I guess its all about skill level and interest. I personally love the threads where guys actually improve functionality and appearance of their machines. A well thought out customize or refurb thread where people genuinely try, or show case talent and skill.. instead of halfassing a machine and "oh it looks so great, the polished turd that fell out of the pig you just traded lipstick with" FML

Unfortunately, the very strong vast majority does not appreciate those people you listed mostly due to lack of ability to do the same. For instance, tire threads go on for days because every tom, dick, and harry can buy tires, have them mounted, and feel like they accomplished some giant feat of ingenuity. Usually they are the same tires everyone else runs too!!! "Ohh my cubs special cuz I have the same tires as everyone else!" Same goes for all the after market parts.

Not trying to take away from those who can't think passed their nose or know how to use 8th grade math and a tape measure, but the guys that can, should support each other.

This sounds like a good idea.
I am guilty of not enough "good job" comments also. But if it's one of our core group I figure we all know what we are doing and don't need encouragement. I usuallly wait till I see significant progress before I say something. I don't want to sound like a mindless cheerleader.
I have great respect for people who can do a good thread. I try but I'm terrible at documenting what I'm doing. I start with good intentions then it's really a pic when I started and when I'm done.

I never thought of it the way you mentioned it, but I am definitely guilty. I'm on here A LOT and don't comment on threads nearly as much as I view them. I've spoken with Olds(Tim) on a few occasions and have even considered purchasing a tractor off of him. After reading further and seeing his rebuild threads, WOW.

I'm not singling Tim out here, just using him as an example of someone I've spoken with here. To everyone listed and not listed for that matter, keep up the good work. I surely do appreciate your hard work and craftsmanship. I secretly gloat.

Very well said, so wanted to bring it back to the top.
On something you touched on. The "good job, looks great", lipstick on a pig, is still a pig thing. Sometimes I would rather get scolded for doing something that looks like $hi7, than getting the sympathy "good job, keep at it" thing, knowing I needed to re-do it.
Like the everyone gets a trophy thing that drives me nuts. If I think it looks great, in my opinion, cause that's all I can give, is "my opinion", I'll say something. "If" I can suggest something that may help out I will, and if I don't care for the job being done, I will just move onto another thread.
I just don't care for blowing smoke up someone's skirt, and basically lie to them saying their stuff looks great when it don't. And how does that help someone to learn the "right way"?
I got told by a few much wiser than I when I did my "O" that I should have done this or that different, and I took their advice, and felt better for it, and turned out a much better tractor in the end because of it.
Now if all coments would have been "good job, looks great", how would I have turned out such a fantastically gorgeous tractor?
One last thing, cause by now I'm sure all are sick of reading this rambling old man. I understand there are different skill levels, and that's fine, but with a little persuasion, and guidance, you too can grow to the next level. Just do the best you can do today, and hopefully tomorrow will be another day.
