Default Splitting the "B"

For the IH tractor fans out there...

I was using the B on Sunday to rearrange machinery on the farm when I had to use the starter. Well, for the 500th time, the starter jammed in the worn ring gear. I finally came to my senses and had enough of this BS, so I split the tractor! Replacing (possibly flipping, well see) the ring gear and the throw out bearing. Clutch and pressure plate looks good. There will be more to do after it gets re-mated, including left side brake, governor, and carburetor kit. Heres some pics. One when it was repainted, and now its present glory. Enjoy!

Can't flip that ring gear. The teeth are taper cut on the correct side to aid in starter engagement, not that way on the back side. The flywheel needs turned, and that clutch does not look healthy. I suggest a clutch job with new p-plate, disk, and turning the flywheel. If you do proceed with that repair, make sure you find someone to grind it who knows it's a step flywheel and how to properly grind it.

Jon, thanks for the suggestions. Edit: My first thought is to use the clutch/PP, because it looks good, but now I am having second thoughts! there is no grooves on the flywheel or PP, but it does have some wear on the fingers. the PP springs look good from the outside, but I imagine over time they have become weaker. The ring gear, yes, you are right, will need replaced.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
