Never Seen This Before!
I went to look at with intentions of buying a Cub 102 from a craigslist ad. When I got there I couldn't believe my eyes. The P/O must of had some steering problems in the past so he obviously took care of it. He fabricated a steering box, column, and steering wheel from an old car to fit on the 102. The tower was cut up and a bunch of brackets welded to the tractor. I must say he did do a decent job but the steering wheel looked huge. The man selling it didn't even realize it was nowhere near being original. So I know he wasn't the "fabricator" that did it. I told him it's a shame it got cut up to put that in there. It was otherwise very much restorable. I didn't buy it-way too much work for me!

I saw one like that too!! Mine was upstate on a trip, I saw a 104 in a guys yard, so I drove around the block. From the driver's LHS, it looked fine, but on the other side was a surprise. I asked him how much for curiosity and he said $250. It was tempting, but I like them in original shape and I figured it would bug me if I knew that was sitting out in the garage. I must say that it was tempting with the blade on the front in good shape, but I drove on....though I offered $$ for the front blade and he refused to part it off.
Kind of makes you wonder why people go through all of that trouble to change things around, but I suppose they have their reasons... Cub Cadet 123

I think I can shed light on this thought! My dad would be a prime person back in the day to do something like that repair you speak of! As he would gotten the cub cheap maybe even that part broke and said I have one out of some junk that would work great! Not thinking it would still be useable in 30 years or worth anything for that matter! He was just making it useable with what he had! And you would have to admit that big ol steering wheel would make it like power steering!! Now days he has more spending funds and wouldnt think of it!!! Not saying he did it though he always wanted a cub, we borrowed one for a while but the guy that had it would not sell it cheap enough! Lol

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
