An interesting 124
I picked up a 124 this weekend. It has accessories I've been wanting. It has hydraulics and sleeve hitch with spring assist, along with the Brinly adapter. It also has working headlights. The interesting part of this tractor is a PO put 15" wheels on and made some tall front spindles to raise the front up to match the rear. Brackets have been added to the deck and mule drive for the taller set up. The tractor runs great. If this tractor could talk

That's neat Mike. Looks like he extended the mule and the deck brackets as well to compensate. Very interesting

Tractor has some interesting changes. I kind of like it. I noticed that it looks like it could have turning brakes. Did you buy from the PO? If so did he indicate what his reasons for the changes are? Thanks for posting.

It has a rear end with disc brakes. The PO owner made foot pedals to separately activate the brakes. The fella I bought it off of didn't do the work. He got it from a lady who had it. He said it was her husband's and he did the mods. He passed away a long time ago. I did get the owners manual with the hydraulics manual. It cleaned up nicely. I'm going to paint the rims white and leave it. I like how it is. It has character.

I like it. The bigger wheels give it a very nice stance and probably makes the gearing more useful for around the yard chores. I have a few narrow frames and I have always thought the gearing was a a bit low for regular yard work. There is something about that setup that just looks right.

I actually don't use third too much. Mostly use second, but wish there was a gear somewhere between second and third. I find second too slow and third too fast when mowing or just generally hauling the cart around the yard. For some reason, it just seems like there is a large gap between the two of them, so I just take my time and use second. With this setup, the second gear would probably be close to perfect.

Looks like a nice 124 but I would like to see better pictures? I use mine more than any other machine.

I think that would be a good garden tractor for large gardens.
Nice find.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
