If anyone is interested in a 2" tach check out this link. Lots of other good stuff too. Chris

Good find! Just wonder how precise it is compare to a optical speed sensor one

These tachs are digital frequency counters.
Unless the programing or logic is bad there are only two sources for error. The first is the time base used to know when a minute is up. If the time base drifts 2% so does the RPM reading. A better unit would use an external 50 cent crystal. A really good one would control the crystal temperature. I expect these use a clock internal to the chip which is less accurate and changes as the chip heats up with use. The 2nd source of error is in sensing. A optical setup with good contrast will be quite good. To know how well a wire wrapped on a plug wire will work look at that signal with a scope. A single cylinder does not have a distributor which is one less source of noise. A good plug wire should help. Less electrical noise is good. |

According to this: http://veethree.com/veethree_catalogue.pdf
That gauge is on page 13, and is #2. I picks up off the ignition coil, so it's not inductive. PLUS, it is for a minimum of 2 pulse per revolution. So, it won't work with the single cylinder K series. I will work on the KT's and the 3cyl Kubotas. This has been the biggest problem I've found with these little tach's is they are for wasted spark single cylinders. It doesn't appear to work with magneto ignition either so it won't work with the Mag18 or CH's. Sorry guys. However, if you are smart enough, you could make it read off of the alternator on the Mag motors. |

So does anyone know of a 2'' tach that will work on our 1 cylinder Kohlers?

Seems like there would be. But I have 10 different catalogs and probably 20 vendors I can call that carry that sort of thing. Plus a million internet searches and checked every gauge manufacturer that I know of. Nothing. There are many that are for the wasted spark, or 2 sparks per revolution.... none for singe. I do think that there are a few digital ones. But not analog (needle) gauges.

I contacted David Kirk a few months ago . He said he had to contract for 100 tachs at a time ,also took too long to sell them. If there was enough interest he would offer them again. Does anyone remember when he sold them and if they were for 1 cylinder engines only?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
