The bore looks fine, no scoring that I can see. I had no problems with steering, no wandering or anything, just leaking out the shaft seal.

I'm inclined to just leave it be because there is a hard plastic (grayish) ring behind the cracked part and in front of the o-ring that seems intact and may be the actual wiper if the slit part is not a crack and is there for removal. I haven't found a good picture of any newer ones to compare it to. I have two of these cylinders and the other one on my 1864 looks like it has a crack/slit as well. It also has a bit of a leak and will be next up to rebuild if I can get this one working, but it's not nearly as bad of a leaker as this one. It just weeps a little at the shaft. This one dripped and left a puddle around the shaft even while sitting.

--edit---
I added a zoomed and cropped picture of the one I already posted. It doesn't look like a split for removal, it looks like it has cracked.

It does look cracked.
It could be a rod wiper but thinking it is a support to guide the rod in the bore and prevent the "O" ring from excessive wear and support the rod so the chrome does not have any contact with the metal gland.
A linear "bearing" so to speak, would make sense to me.
I'd spin one up on the lathe, made of nylon or Teflon, old days it would be brass prolly..
I'd think it should be a close tolerance on the rod.

There is a backup o-ring and a wiper seal like j-mech posted a link of. Neither of these I can get locally.

Best I can tell, I need an AN-01 wiper seal and a -112 B90 1/2" ID 11/16"OD 3/32" CS o-ring from the O-Ring store. Does that seem right?

I will try the NAPA in town before ordering them, they're an auto-home improvement-hardware-machine shop store. They just might have just what I need so I can match it up before buying. It makes me nervous buying things I can't see because it's depressing when the brown truck comes and I get excited, only to open the box and have the wrong part.

I placed an order Saturday from theoringstore.com of these pieces and the order has yet to ship, growing ever more impatient as I often do with every project, and act impulsively, I fired up the old google machine and started seeking a place within driving distance that would have these seals. I found a place, Jonestown Ag Supply, in Jonestown PA and described what I needed, and he said he's pretty sure he has it all. So I drove there with my o-rings and seal in hand. He identified them immediately by eye and had every single piece in stock except the backup washer, but he said mine looked good and could be reused. Like a little boy who was just given a gift he's always wanted, I can't wait to get home and reassemble this thing this evening. I will post back the part numbers of all these pieces for repacking the cylinder when I get home and make sure they all work as planned.

Nice, were you able to get it back together and working again yet?

Sure did. I just didn’t get a chance to post about it. My weld isn’t exactly perfectly smooth but it did the job. No leaks and it works great.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
