Charging issues with Cub 107
Hi gents,
So now that it has finally warmed up in MD, I decided I would install the new wiring harness. I was hoping to fix the no charging issue I was having but no such luck. I am a bit baffled as the V/R looks to be in good shape. I followed the wiring diagram but when I went to connect the battery the top coil would spark and buzz. I ended up flipping the B & F terminals and the buzzing stopped, was able to get it running and it is running great now but I still have no charge. Does anyone have pictures of the contacts on their V/R? The only i.d. markings I could find on mine was Delco Remy 987 9L which hasn't yielded any search results. I'm going to start looking for a S/G rebuild kit and a new V/R but figured somebody here might know what I've messed up here. Thanks in advance for your assistance. I'm going to go out and snap some pictures now. |

You can't just swap terminals.
Using a wiring diagram, verify that all the wires are correctly installed. Sounds like it is wired wrong. If it is wired correctly, there are checks you can perform to find the failed or non working component. |

I didn't just swap terminals, I found conflicting diagrams on which terminal is which. If I follow the wiring diagram that came with the wiring harness, I have continuous sparking from the top coil contacts when battery is connected which doesn't seem right.

The terminals on the VR are marked. It has to be wired according to the labels on the terminals.

And that the wires that are attached to the labeled voltage regulator terminals,
are indeed attached to the proper labeled terminals on the starter/gen. and while you are at it, make sure the V/R is grounded by testing it with a meter, I've seen a lot of paint/corrosion prevent a good ground. The little braided wire on the rubber feet is the ground. |

So after removing some paint I found the labels and did have it wired properly. The charging contact may be bad, if I apply pressure to have them contact it shows positive charge but if I let them touch on their own it barely makes a connection. I think I may just try to order a new one.

The V/R has to be and must be properly grounded to function correctly.
AS A TEST..... Run a long jumper wire from the Battery (-) negative terminal to the Mounting Feet of the V/R to see if it functions correctly. If it does, then you have a grounding problem. If it does not, then you have a V/R issue.

Might try cleaning the contacts on the battery cut-out coil a little bit, just like you would a set of points.

Put a multimeter on the battery with it running. What is it reading? Forget the dash gauge. What if it isn't working? Can't go by it. Check it with a meter before you go ordering parts. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
