Default Newly acquired 1864

Purchased this last night. Came with a 54 gt deck that will be put under my smoker. Also came with a front blade. Purchased knowing it didn't have compression. Removed the valve covers to find 2 bent valves. Is it worth fixing or worth more in parts?

Looks like bent pushrods to me.
Pull the head and see if it lost a valve seat. Valves may have stuck, but that motor did that a lot. Sometimes the rocker studs came loose, or pulled out, sometimes the seat fell out. It's likely not too bad to fix.

But if you don't know the difference between a valve and a pushrod..... maybe you better seek some help fixing it.

My bad. I do know the difference. I knew what I meant, just didn't come out right. I'll dig into it.

Yeah...... they are such similar parts they're easy to mix up.

I'm not the one that needs to know. I already know the difference. I'm the guy answering the questions.

Man, that motor looks suspiciously clean inside.

I'd try to get a little history from the previous owner. I'm no expert, but I'd bet that motor was apart for some head gaskets and the rocker arms got cranked down too tight on reassembly.

Also, I'd put new push rods in and do a compression check. Why tear apart a motor if you don't have too?

Make sure you put some good oil in the motor.

How many CH18's you been into Peter?
You ever torque a set of rockers on one? They are torque-to-set. How do you suppose they got overtightened? Even if they were too tight by torque, the rocker stud will only let them get so tight, so they can't be set too tight and cause pushrod damage.

The early engines had hollow pushrods and different rockers. They were bad about bending. You can upgrade to the new style. Pulling the head is still a good idea. Pretty cheap to do.

Working on getting the heads off. On number two, one of the head bolts was not very tight. Thinking this has been apart at one time or another.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
