Default 149 Implosion

Took the 149 out of the garage today to haul some firewood around. It was running fine and then all of a sudden there was a loud bang and it sputtered and died. Pulled the head off and there's oil and small pieces of metal everywhere. This is a little above my level of mechanical knowledge but I'm guessing it either threw the rod or the balance gears blew up. My friend just so happens to have a K341 sitting in his basement. I believe it came out of a wheel horse. Does anyone know if I would be able to put this into my 149 without too much fuss?

Some Wheel Horses used the cub style pan on there tractors with iso mounts. You will have to look at the block to know for sure.

We are looking into that today. I also found a K341 for sale locally out of a simplicity. Anyone know anything about those? I've heard of some people repowering with B&S Vangaurd engines. Has anyone done that before?

We know a lot about all things Cub Cadet. The easiest way to get the right engine, is to find a replacement from another Cub Cadet. There are literally 100 different configurations that a Kohler motor can be set up. 3 different block styles, at least 10 different crankshafts..... Best bet is to find a used motor from a Cub Cadet.

I've seen a couple hack jobs where people shoe horned a Vanguard into a 149. I don't recommend it. If you don't know how to rebuild a K series Kohler, I can do it for you. Send me a PM for details.

J-mech is right, you can end up spending more money trying to make something fit thats not made for it than repairing what you have.

The motor in it, if rebuilt, will last you a long long time if taken care of.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I'm new to the Cub Cadet world. The only reason I'm even considering anything other than rebuilding the engine that is in it is because no one in my area will touch a K series for some reason and I was planning on using this tractor to plow snow and money is really tight. I've never rebuilt an engine before and I don't really have the space to do it at the moment. But it seems like the quickest/cheapest/best way to go is rebuilding what I have. Again, thanks for the help everyone.

Try for a used engine from a like model. Knowing whom to buy from helps, and I would use the engine easy. It should keep your drive clear in the winter! Then, have your bad engine rebuilt later

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
