Serial on the Kohler starts with D so that is 1968, and the tractor is 1964 so obviously not the original engine. Oscar Will's 50 Years of Cub mentions the 100 having a wide spoke steering wheel. But again, who knows what this little cub has been thru. Personally I don't know enough one way or the other. Didn't the size of the battery box change right around this model as well?

According to the spec sheet in the 70/100 op manual, the 70 had a 5 quart gas tank and the 100 was 6.5 quart. Maybe that's a clue, if someone changed motors I doubt they'd also change gas tanks. http://ccmanuals.info/pdf/70-100%20O...r%20Manual.pdf page 25 |

Check the head and see if it is a low boss one.
May have had the motor replaced. Gas tanks are not interchangeable .

Re 70/100 battery box. I had an early 70 many years ago and it had the smaller battery box, my early 100 has the large battery box.

The model 100 could also be known for having stress cracks develop around the frame engine mount holes. My model 100 had those cracks, and I did find a lot of information on how to correct that problem. I tend to believe that not all 100's had cracked frames, but I do believe stronger that the model 70 has had nearly zero complaints about frame cracks. Also, my 100 had the large steering wheel commonly associated with the model 123.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
