Default Finally found my dream tractor

I'm just absolutely overjoyed by this.

Picked up this absolutely pristine, gorgeous 782 yesterday from an exceptionally nice man off Craigslist in Omaha. Driving over from Des Moines yesterday was quite an adventure with the 40 MPH winds in my ratty old pickup that needed an alternator halfway through. Thank goodness for old trucks and auto parts stores with nice parking lots.

It's a very late IH model (April? of 81 SN 693258) with a series II KT17 in it. Hour gauge is broken, so I don't know for sure how many it has, but it's been VERY well taken care of over the years, and runs like a dream.

I've wanted one since I can remember visiting the IH dealer when I was probably 4 or 5. It's honestly one of my earlier childhood memories and it's stuck with me all these years.

I NEVER thought I'd find an original one that was this well taken care of, let alone for a fantastic price.

It also came with a very nice 44C deck that has a gage wheel ripped off somehow, which will need a bit of welding. Other than that minor issue (and the deflector piece being a bit messed up) the deck is pretty much perfect.

It obviously needs a new seat, a new piece of dash plastic, and (I think?) an IH emblem for the upper grill screen. I've noticed a couple very minor other issues (paint scratches, a small dent or two), but other than that I've got something that looks (and runs) like it could have rolled off the showroom floor not so long ago. I'm not over the moon about the tires, so I'll probably switch those out at some point with something a little more tractor-y.

I still love (and will keep working on) the older ones, but this thing is really on a whole different level.

Nice looking Cub, congrats.

Now for the debate. It is my understanding that an IH made tractor would say International on the dash and a CCC made would say Cub Cadet. So does this tractor have the wrong dash on it or is this common on Cub's made so close to CCC taking over? Where's Lew? He'll know.

Nice. Cast iron rear end and series 2 motor you can't go wrong. Glad you found it.

I have no reason to believe this one has been apart. The owners manual I got with it shows a picture of a “cub cadet” serial number tag, so there may have been a bit of Pre-planning going on. Or the owners manual may have been from later on, too.

Isn't it great to finally get the Cadet you always wanted?
So, is the paint original? Sure looks mighty nice to be that old. How is it mechanically? I prefer IH 82 series machines just for the fact they are IH, not that it makes them any better or worse. What does the serial tag say? I kind of always figured that was the determining factor of whether or not a machine was IH of CCC built.

Very nice find! I'm glad you got it! I grew up on new 782. One of my favorites.

As far as the "IH" questions asked:

Yes, the dash should say "International" above "Cub Cadet". But that doesn't necessarily mean that it wasn't IH built. They also did away with the IH badge on the steering wheel cap. Later they deleted the IH badging altogether. IH did use the old style serial tag, but that late in the game they may have run out of the dash covers with "International" on them. They also may have run out of IH serial tags (if it has a CCC tag on it). They didn't switch to the aluminum rear and black front axle for a while. If that engine is a Series II, then it has been replaced.

The last IH built 782 was serial number 694248.... so yours is literally 990 from the end. By serial number, it's still an IH.

I was not at all questioning whether or not it was IH built, i can plainly see it has an IH tag on it. I was questioning why the dash doesn't say International? I was curious if it was because it was replaced or if it was common on tractor's built so close to the end of Ih ownership?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
