1650 Cork gasket leaking Part II
Well got the hydro removed from the rear today. I must say it went very smooth. I took everyones advice and removed the rear from the tractor. It took me about six hours. If I would have had all the tools, jacks, and blocks out it would have went much quicker. I cleaned both surfaces real good before bolting the hydro and rear end together. I noticed on the top half of the mating surface where the gasket sits I had some aluminum discoloration. Nothing was pitted or anything but it was clear something changed the color. I got to thinking about what caused this and the only thing I could come up with is the battery sits real close to that location and I wonder if some acid had worked its way down to the gasket at some point. The gasket was lets just say falling to pieces. I know other models have this issue also but there battery sits in the engine area. I just cant help but wonder if this causes issues in the rear of the Quite Lines. I think im going to find something to put the battery in to keep the acid contained if it ever leaks again under the seat. I got to run the tractor around a little bit until the tie rod fell off and both front wheels when a different direction lol.

I wouldn't sweat it. Seems if I remember, a couple of mine were stained as well...
If your battery starts oozing it's contents, it would be time to replace it anyway.

the cork gasket gets cracked on all most every unit as it ages. I like to put aviation permatex on the gasket when I reassemble and make sure to torque the hydro mounting bolts to the diff. I like to leave the unit out of the tractor for a couple days to retorque the bolts before I install it in the tractor, just to make sure that cork gasket gets compressed good.

Your cork gasket was 35 years old, give/take.
The cork has reached it's life expectancy, deal with it. Because I like to do things my way, I used a neoprene ho'maid gasket, and installed it dry, on one of my 782's. So far no problems, but it is only about 10 years and 900+ hours. I doubt in another 35 years I'll be around, although I'd like to achieve a 100+and die in bed---------- --------with a satisfied 30 year old nymphomaniac. Now about about those 72 Virgins in the next life, Who came up with that number anyway? |

One of my hydros had evidence of battery corrosion on the rear, although not specifically around the pump. Don't worry about it--just clean it up, spray a little paint to stop the rust and put it back together and mow on! Like has been said, the pump gasket is just one of those things that is going to fail once it is10-30 years old. Ask any long standing dealer and they will tell you that its an expensive repair with amount 90% of the cost in labor.
Glad you got it fixed! If you try to come up with something to sit the battery in, make sure you don't raise it too high and cause the terminals to get into the seat.

I have some paint damage in my Quiet Line, but nothing serious. I just done what John suggested. Most of the time, I guess it's an old battery left in the tractor and freezes then cracks during a winter. I placed a cut piece of roofing shingle in all my tractors.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
