Default I need some help identifying my recent "Inheritance".

Hey y'all! (I am from Texas, LOL.) New guy here, long time Farmall Guy, own several Cubs including a 66 Lo Boy (as well as a 154 with it's junk clutch set up), Super A and a Super C, but just getting into Cub Cadets. I'm 46 and grew up cutting 4 acres of St. Augustine in S. Texas on a Snapper Comet and Farmall Cub with a belly mower. Now I have a 4 acre place of my own NW of Austin and use the Super A and a Snapper ZTR (that is now an antique its self). My dad is 80 and the youngest of 9. He only has one sister left, and inherited a bunch of junk when three of his brothers passed away. In order to avoid the "panic" when he passes, my brother and I are trying to do something with stuff he accumulated (hoarded?) over the years. I recently brought back a lo boy trailer full of garden tractors, including three Cub Cadets, a 73 according to the hood (haven't verified by the serial number yet), which is pretty rough and appears to have had the original engine replaced at one time, judging by the kohler in it now have a gear starter and the frame "clearanced" with a torch. The other is a red 582 "Special", which I have found is like a 582 but was cheaper due to it having a 482 transmission, and was made by MTD. It is in pretty good shape, but the "MTD" thing has me turned off somewhat.

I have decided to keep the other CC, which is in better shape, and has a tiller that has only been ATTEMPTED to be used on the tractor, as it doesn't have a creeper gear. I found the serial number (385058) cast into the trans housing "upside down), and found a chart on this site to help ID the tractor. The engine tag indicates a K301. In the resource I located on this site, I have determined that the only no hydrostatic drive tractor with the K301 engine that fits in the range of numbers is a 126.

You have a 128.

Depending on Serial number, the 582 Special could be an IH tractor.

Check the tag on the 582, if it says International on it then it's obviously IH built and if it says Cub Cadet then it's mtd built but they were still made in the same factory by the same people and with the same parts so there's no reason to dislike it.

The tractor you have pictured would appear to be a 128. The red stripe on the hood means it came factory with a 12hp engine.

I now realize that the number I found was a casting number. I looked up the tractor on tractordata.com and see that there should be a serial number tag for the tractor on the back. I don't recall seeing one their, but I will take a second look.

As for the 582 Special, it ran and has a mower deck, and is a pretty solid tractor. I just don't need another mower. It doesn't have a lift or a way to put the tiller on it. It is also lacking the trademark gear driven transmission that, to me at least, is one of the features that makes a Cub Cadet what it is. (Peerless belt driven trans like a 482.) I took the 582S for a while to mow with while the clutch was out in my 1949 Cub. Funny thing is, the 582S has more horsepower than a Cub. There is something to be said for "weight", isn't there?

The tag could also be attached to the frame on the left side by the clutch pedal.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
